Be it known that I, WILLIAM RODMAN SMYTHE, of Madison, county, of Lake, and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved \Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved wrench that is simple and durable in construction, can be easily and quickly adjusted to any desired opening within its range, and when adjusted will keep its position under any pressure.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation taken on line y 1 Fig. 4, showing the wrench at maximum opening. Fig. 2 is a side elevation taken on line y y, Fig. 4, showing the same partly open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation taken on line y 3 Fig. 4, showing the same closed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same, taken on line 00 at, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is aview of the spring in detail. Fig. 6 is an enlarged elevation of the rear part of the movable jaw. Figs. 7 and 8 are plans of angles on which the slots may be constructed.
In the drawings, B is the bar, of which A is the fixed jaw and H is the handle.
0 is a-slot cut through B at a definite angle to the axis of B.
K is the movable sleeve, of which J is the aw.
D is a slot cut through both sides of K a a definite angle to the axis or line of motion of K.
P is a pin which passes through slots 0 and D, of which E, Fig. 4, is a fixed head. F is the opposite head riveted to P.
L is the spring.
In Fig. 5 Lis the shape of spring. N is the hole large enough to slide over P. O is alongitudinal section of spring L. R is the flange or guard surrounding the slot D on both sides of the sleeve K, within which the heads of the pin P move, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. S is the space on the surface of K between the inner edge of R and outer edge of -the slot D, upon which the spring L and opposite head of pin P slide.
Fig. '7 shows the preferable angles to be used in construction, in which VN Z represent the angle on which slot 0 is constructed, which may be any angle. MNZ is the angle upon which slot D is constructed, which preferably is twice the angle VN Z. Fig. 8 shows the same angles reversed, onwhich the slots may be constructed.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen K and P are in position shown in Fig. 1, the moving of P toward A carries K forward until J is in the desired position. P is now left in its position. Force being applied, J remains immovable until P is moved by operator or until it is. sheared off by the force.
L is a spring used to give sufficient tension to the heads of P to prevent its changing position of its own weight when no force is being applied.
The theory of the operation is as follows: Then force is applied at J, it is communicated from the lower side of the slot D through P to the upper side of the slot 0. At P this force is resolved into two forces, one of which tends to cause P to move down in slot 0, and the other tends to cause it to move up in slot D. The slots 0 and D are placed at such an angle to each other that these forces balance each other at P. ThereforeP cannot be moved by any force applied at J;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination of bar B having therein slot 0 the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of bar B on which slides sleeve K having therein slot D, the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of sleeve K, in which combination the axes of bar 13 and sleevev K coincide with pin P passing through slots 0 and D at the point of intersection of their axes substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wrench, the combination of bar B having therein slot 0 the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of bar B on which slides sleeve K having therein slot D, the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of sleeve K, in which combination the axes of bar B and sleeve K coincide, with pin P passing through slots 0 and D at the point of the intersection of their axes, and having thereon heads E and F, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a wrench, the combination of bar B having therein slot 0 the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of bar B on which slides sleeve K having therein slot D, the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of sleeve K, in which combination the axes of bar 13 and sleeve K coincide, with pin P passing through slots 0 and D at the point of the intersection of their axes; and having thereon heads E and F, in which com bination the axes of slots 0 and D are at such an angle to each other that the force applied at J will resolve itself into two forces, one exerted on a side of slot 0, and the other on a side of slot D so that they will balance each other at center of pin P, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a wrench, the combination of bar 13 having therein slot 0 the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of bar B on which slides sleeve K having therein slot D, the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of sleeve K, in which combination the axes of bar B and sleeve K coincide, with pin P passing through slots 0 and D at the point of the intersection of their axes; and having thereon heads E and F; inwhich combination the axes of slots 0 and D are at such an angle to each other that the force applied at J will resolve itself into two forces, one
exerted on a side of slot 0, and the other on a side of slot D so that they will balance each other at center of pin P and flange R; passing around slot D at a definite distance therefrom, forming a groove in which E and F may move, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a wrench, the combination of bar B having therein slot C the axis of which makes a definite angle with the axis of bar B on which slides sleeve K having therein slot D, the axis of which makes adefinite angle with the axis of sleeve K, in which combination the axes of bar B and sleeve K coincide, with pin P passing through slots G and D at the point of the intersection of their axes; and having thereon heads E and F; in which combination the axes of slots 0 and D are at such an angle to each other that the force applied at J will resolve itself into two forces, one exerted on a side of slot (3, and the other on a side of slot D so that they will balance each other at center of pin P and flange R; passing around slot D at a definite distance therefrom, forming a groove in which E and F may move; and spring L resting on shoulder S, and under heads E or F, all substantially as shown and described.
