Description

P. PEDERSEN. NUT VISE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 1917- 1,314,017. Patented Aug. 26, 1919.

NUT-VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed. July 12, 1917. Serial No. 180,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pnonn PEDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Oxford, in the county of Curry and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nut vises and its prime object is to provide a device of this class that is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and that is durable and efficient in operation. \Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved nut vise.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line L4 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts in both views.
I provide an oblong frame denoted by reference numeral 1, open in the center and formed with a shank 2 which may be provided with a handle (not shown). One end of the frame 1 comprises a movable core 4:, separate from the balance of the frame, and which is formed with a threaded opening 4: to receive the screw 5 that is provided with the operating handle 6. The screw 5 at its inner end carries the head 7 provided with the transverse jaw 8 which is disposed in alinement with the stationary jaw 9 embedded in a grooved portion of the frame 1. The said core 4 is formed with the diametrically opposed sockets 11 and with slots 12 opening into said sockets at right angles thereto. In the socket 11 I provide lugs 13 that rest upon springs 14 which yieldingly press said lugs out from the sockets and into grooves 15 formed in the inner lateral edges of the frame 1. Each lug is provided with a handle 16 that projects out through the slots 12 and by means of which the lugs may be retracted to permit adjustment of the core or member at with relation to the frame 1. When the said handles 16 are pressed toward each other the core 4, screw 5 and head 7 can be moved instantly to any point along the frame 1 and by releasing the handles 16 so that the lugs 13 may occupy any pair of grooves 15 said core 1 is locked in position with relation to the said frame. The arrangement just described permits a very quick adjustment of the jaw S with relation to the jaw 9. The nut 17 to be removed from the screw or bolt 18 is retained between the jaws 8, 9 while the screw or bolt is turned and the nut may be so retained while it is being re-threaded if desired.
WVhat is claimed is In a nut vise, a hollow frame open at one end, a fixed jaw carried at the closed end of said frame, the sides of said frame being formed with a plurality of oppositely disposed grooves, a core movably arranged in said frame and formed with lateral sockets and with slots opening into said sockets, spring-pressed lugs disposed in said sockets for yielding engagement with the grooved portions of said frame whereby said core is supported in adjusted position in said frame, handles for said lugs, extending through said core-slots, whereby said lugs" may be moved relatively, and a movable jaw operatively carried by said core within said frame for cooperation with said fixed jaw.
In testimony that I claim that the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PEDER PEDERSEN.
Witnesses:
I. G. HILL, JAMES H. HILL.
