This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a wrench and has for its primaryobject the provision of a simple form of sliding jaw wrench which will be strong and durable as well as highly efficient in use and comparatively inexpensive and which may be readily assembled or a justed.
This invention has for another object the provision of a wrenchof the character stated in which the shank of the sliding jaw may be readily released and adjusted and then securely locked. in position at the minimum expenditure of time and effort.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a wrench of the character stated including novel means for operating and guiding the sliding shank and means within the hollow handle for limiting movement of the sliding shank in one direction, the sta tionary inner jaw limiting movement of the slidable shank and sliding jaw in the reverse direction.
With the foregoing and other. objects in view as will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application and inwhich:

Referring more in detail to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the skeleton body of the wrench upon the outer or forward end of which is formed the stationary jaw 2 while the enlarged hollow handle 3 projects from the opposite end of the body 1 and is connected therewith by the neck portion 4 at the innerend of the skeleton body 1 and having opposite open side portions 5, the
purpose of which will presently appear. It
will also be seen that the outer or rear end of the hollow handle 3 is rounded and the opposite sides are left open, to be closed by side handle plates or members 6 which are adapted to be secured upon opposite sides of the handle 3 by suitable screws 10 passed 7 therethrough and through the opposite upper and lower lugs 11 which are directed toward each other from the upper and lower portions of, the handle 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. These lugs 11 have flat rear faces 12, the purpose of which will presently appear. These lugs 11 also have flat opposed faces 13 spaced a suitable distance apart to permit passage therebetween of the opposite narrow edges of the tank 8 having the movable jaw or slidable jaw 7 formed rigid upon its outer or forward end. The shank 8 is provided with suitable teeth 9 upon its opposite narrow edges which may be termed its upper and lower edges and the shank 8 is furtherprovided at its rear end with a reduced threaded extension 14, upon which may be threaded the stop nut 15 of such a size as to project beyond the narrow side faces of the shank 8 and beyond the upper and lower edges or narrow edges thereof so as to engage the flat rear faces 12 of the lugs 11 and thereby limit outwardlor forward movement of the shank 8.
Previous to extending the shank 8 through the neck portion of the wrench. the shank and outer jaw locking ring 16 should be placed within the neck portion 4 and turned so as to permit the shank 8 to "be passed therethrough. The-ring 16 is provided'at one or more places on its inner face with the locking threads which are adapted to engage even. the upper or lower threads of the 'sliank- 8 to lock the same against longitudinal move-- ment. The remainder of the inner .tace ot' the ring 16 is smooth so as to permit tree longitudinal movement of the shank 8 therethrough when the threads 17 are disengaged from the threads 9 of the shank 8. This ring 16 is also preferably provided on its outer face with suitable recesses or pockets 18 within one of which is engaged the free end or pointed upturned end 19 of a small spring 20 of the leaf spring variety or of some other suitable form and which is secured to the inner face of the portion leithcr at the lower side thereof as shown in the drawings or at the upper side as may be desired. It will be seen that the diametrically opposite portions of the locking pin project through the open side t so that the ring 16 may be readily rotated as the wrench is grasped by the handle 3. I
From the foregoing, aken in connection with the accompanying drawings,it will be seen that I have provided a simple and cfli cient "form of wrench which may be readily assembled or disassembled and in which the outer jaw 7 may be readily adjusted with resl ect to the stationary inner jaw 2 and locked in adjusted position.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope position to prevent movement of the outer of what is claimed without departing troin the spirit of the invention.

A wrench comprising a skeleton body having a rigid jaw formed at one end and a neck at the opposite end, a handle extended from said neck and having open sides, side handle members for closing the open sides of said handle, a shank slidable longitudinally through said skeleton body through the neck and through a portion of the handle, means within said neck and projecting through the sides thereof to lock the shank against movement, an outer jaw carried by said shank, stop lugs formed within said handle and directed toward one another, said shank beingextended between said stop lugs, and means carried by said shank for engagement with said stop lugs to limit outward movement of said shank.
A wrench comprising a body, a stationary jaw formed at one end of said body, a neck formed at the opposite end 01 said body and having open side portions, a handle extended from said neck, a shank slidzble through said handle and said body and through said neck, an outer jaw carried by said shank, said shank having;- threads formed on its upper and lower taces, a ring within said neck and extending thiauugh the open side portions thereof, said ring; surroundingsaid shank and having threads on a portion of its inner lace tor engagement with the threads of said shank to lock the latter against movement, means for resiliently retaining said ring against rotation, said shank having a reduced end extension, a nut threaded on said extension, and means within said handle for cooperation with saidnut to limit outward movement of the said shank.

A wrench comprisinga'body portion, a stationary jaw carried by'said body portion, a neck formed at one end oisaid body portion and having open sides, a handle frame extended from said neck, sidehandle members secured upon said handle frame, a shank slidable through said body and through the neck and the handle, an outer jaw carried by said shank, means for locking the shank in adjusted position with respectto said stationary jaw, and means \vithinsaid handle to limit outward movement of said shank.
5. A wrench comprising a body having a rigid aw at one end and a neck at the opposite cnd, a non-rotatable handle extended from said neck, a shank slidable longitudin ally through said body and through the neck and handle, means rotatable within said neck for locking said shank in adjusted position to prevent movement oi said shank, an outer jaw carried by said shank for cooperation with said rigid jaw, and means within said handle to limit outward movement of said shank.
