WRENCH.
A Specication of Letters Patent.
Application `filed October 17, 1.916. Serial No. 126,128.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. GAIssnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
' The device forming the subject matter of this application is a wrench, and one object of the invention is to provide a wrench which i of'Fig.
may be shifted readily, circumferentially of a nut or the head of a bolt, to permit the wrench to secure a new hold on the nut or the head of the bolt, without removing the wrench.
Another object of the'invention is to provide novel means whereby lan yincreased bearing area will be aorded between the actuating lever and the movable jaw,when the lever is moved sidewise to advance the movable jaw toward the iXed jaw.
It/is within the province of the' disclosure to improve generallyand to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view' which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the comblnatlon and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying. drawings Figure l shows in side elevation, a wrench embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 Fig. 3 is a side elevation wherein parts are lbroken away;
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line equipped with a transverse rib 7. rllhe numeral 8 designates a movable jaw coperating with the lixed jaw 2, the jaw S having a rectangular shank 9 mounted for right line sliding movement in the transverse passage 3. The shank 9 coperates with the body portion of the movable jaw to form shoulders 10 overhanging the outer end ed es of the side walls 5 and 6 of the head 1. n one Side of the shank 9 there is fashioned a guide slot 11 receiving the rib 7. ln the inner face of the side wall there is formed a transverse recess 12. Located in the recess 12 is a bowed sprin 14, the`ends of which engage the head port1on of the wrench at the ends of the recess 12. The spring 14 bears' against the shank 9 of the movable jaw 8 and serves to prevent lost motion between the rib 7 and the guide slot 11. @n the inner edgei of the shank 9 of the movable jaw 8 there is fashioned a rack, composed ot round-ended teeth 15. One side ot each tooth 15 is more abruptly inclined, as shown at 20, than is the other side 21, so that the teeth, in edect, point laterally, to a slight extent, as Fig. 3 will show. Connecting the side ,walls 5 and 6 and extended across the longitudinal passage 4 of the head 1 is a pivot element 16 on lwhich is mounted to swing a lever 17, on the inner end ot which fis a rack made up of round-ended teeth 18 meshing into the teeth 15 of the movable jaw. Owing to the fact that the sides of the teeth 15J ot the movable jaw are did'erently inclined, asindicated at 20 and at 21, the teeth 18 of the lever 17 will have an increased bearing area on the teeth 15l of the movable jaw when the lever 17 -is swung laterally, to move the jaw 8 toward the jaw 2. rlhe side wall 5 of the head 1 at its inner end may be equipped with an Y, outstanding finger piece 23, facilitating a shifting of the head, when the lever 17 1s held in the hand of anroper'ator.`
'llhe device forming the subject matter of this application is so constructed that, without removing the wrench from a nut or other object which is being turned, the jaws 2 and 8 may be separated, when the lever 17 is swung in one direction, thereby to permit a rotation of the wrench with respect to the nut. 0n the other hand, when the lever 17 is swung in an' opposite direction, the jaws 8 and 2 will grip the nut and edect a rotation thereof.
The lever 17 may be provided with a recess 51. In the recess 51 is located a spring washer 52 which, coacting With the side wall 5, serves to take up lost motion. The spring washer 52 may be replaced byl a helical spring 53 Shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A wrench comprising a head having a fixed jaw; a movable jaw coperating with the lixed jaw and including a shank disposed transversely of the head and mounted for right line sliding movement in the head, the shank having a straight rack in its inner` edge; and a lever extended longitudinally of the head and pivoted thereto, the lever being provided-at one end with a curved rack composed ofround-ended teeth meshing into the teeth of the rack on the movable jaw, the sides of the teeth of the movL able jaw being inclined, each of said teeth being more abruptly inclined on one side than on the other, thereby to increase the bearing area between the teeth of the two racks, when the lever is swung laterally to cause the movable jaw to move toward the fixed j aw.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' LOUIS E. GAISSER.
