PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed January 24, 1910. Serial No. 539,740.
To all whom 'it may concern? Be it known that we, ALEXANDAR KONDS and PAUL BAJUsz, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at IIToodriver, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-VVrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches, and the objects of our invention are, first to provide a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts easily and quickly assembled; second, to provide a wrench by which considerable leverage can be obtained in rotating a pipe vor structure having a cylindrical surface; third, to furnish a wrench of the above type with means as will be hereinafter described for holding the movable jaw thereof in adjusted position; fourth, to provide a wrench with an angularly disposed movable j aw that will permit of a pipe or similar object being easily gripped, and fifth, to accomplish the above results by a wrench that is strong and durable and inexpensive to manufact-ure.
We attain the above objects by a wrench that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specication, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings F igure 1 is' a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the handle thereof broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a spring-pressed dog adapted to form part of the wrench.
In the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes a portion of a handle having one end thereof off-set or enlarged, as at 2. The free terminus of said enlarged portion 2 is beveled, as at 3 and formed with transverse teeth 4. The handle adjacent to the beveled end thereof is provided with an angularly disposed opening 5 and slidably mounted in said opening is the shank 6 of a movable jaw 7. The jaw 7 is provided with transverse teeth 8 adapted to confront the teeth 4 of the handle 1, and one edge of the shank 6 is provided with ratchet teeth 9 adapted to confront one of the walls of the angularly disposed opening 5.
One edge of the handle 1 adjacent to one end of the opening 5 is provided with an enlargement or casing 10 having a pocket 11 formed therein, and the bottom of the pocket is provided with an opening 12 for the stem 13 of a dog 14. The outer end of the dog 14 is beveled, as at 15, and is adapted to engage the teeth 9. To retain the dog in engagement with said teeth, a coiled compression spring 16 is arranged within the pocket 11 between the inner end of said dog and the bottom of said pocket, said spring encircling the stem 13. The stem 13 pro jects from t-he inner end of the casing 10 and is provided with a handle or knob 17 disposed at right angles to the stem 13.
To hold the shank 6 within the opening 5 when the dog 14 is out of engagement with said shank, the front edge of the handle 1 adjacent to the end of the opening 5 has fixed thereto one end of a resilient arm 1S, the latter having its free end bent, as at 19, to engage the toothed face of the shank 6. The arm 18 is mounted in a recess 20 provided therefor in the handle and is retained therein by a screw 21.
It is thought that the operation of adjusting the shank 6 to position the jaw 7 relatively .to the toothed end 3 of the handle 1 will be fully understood, but it will be seen that upon removing the dog 14 from engagement with a tooth 9, the shank 6 can be shifted in either direction through the opening 5 whereby the jaw 7 will be moved away or toward the teeth 4 as the case may be, so that said jaw can be adjusted as desired, after which the dog 14 is released so as to engage with a tooth 9 whereby the shank 6 is prevented from moving so as to maintain the jaw 7 in its adjusted position.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is
A pipe wrench comprising a handle having the one end thereof beveled and provided with transverse teeth, said handle having an angularly disposed opening formed therein adjacent to the toothed end thereof, a shank movably mounted in said opening and having one edge thereof provided with teeth, a toothed jaw carried by said shank and adapted to confront the toothed end of said handle, a easing arried by said handle tially as; and for' the purpose herein' de= 10 adj aeent to one end of said opening, a springscribed.
