Application filed April 30, 1912.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM J. SCHOENBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenleaf, in the county of Washington and State of Kansas, have invented certain new 1 and useful Improvements in WVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches capable of use in various situations where it would properly perform its functions, the object of the invention being the provision of a wrench of the simplest, cheapest and most durable construction which will permit of the instant application and adjustment of the wrench upon the work or object and absolutely obviate the necessity of removing the hand from the wrench in securingthe desired application and adjust ment.
IVith this object in view my invention consists of a wrench embodying a head provided with a recess or jaw, a handle for en gagem-ent wit-h said head for retaining the head in proper position, and a movable connection between the handle and head for retaining the parts in adjusted position and permitting manipulation directly by the hand.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a similar view partly broken away to illustrate the novel construction of the handle and head and the connecting yoke or bail between the handle and head, and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a modified form of head.
My wrench is of extremely simple construction comprising the handle A, the head B formed with the nut receiving recess or jaw C, the curved ratchet or rack portion D, which is normally engaged by the beveled upper end of the handle which forms the dog or detent E for engaging the rack of the head, and the head and handle are properly connected by the pair of parallel arms F, through which pass the pivots Gr, said arms being connected by the bail or yoke H, with which engages the spring J for normally throwing the head outward and retaining proper engagement of the rack of the head with the dog formed on the handle, as will Specification of Letters Patent.

be readil understood from a perusal of the drawlngs. In Fig. 3 the head is shown with a diii'erent form of recess K but in other respects the construction is identical.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the manner of using my wrench will be readily understood and it must be apparent that the jaw fits upon the object with the dog of the handle in engagement with the ratchet or rack of the head and that to disengage the head or to adjust it to any desired position it is simply necessary to press the finger or thumb upon the bail connecting the head and handle which permits the release of the head and allows the adjustment of the jaw to the proper position. I
1. The wrench herein described, consisting of the handle having its upper end beveled to provide a dog at one side thereof, the head having the jaw upon its up per side and having the rack formed on its lower side to be engaged by the dog of the handle, a swinging connection between the head and handle, said connection consisting of a pair of parallel disposed arms pivoted to the handle and head, and formed with a connecting bail or yoke providing a closed portion to receive pressure from the hand and a flat spring having its lower end secured to the handle and its upper free end bearing against the inner wall of the bail or yoke.
2. In a wrench, the combination of a handle formed with a dog at its upper end, a head formed with a jaw and teeth to engage the dog of the handle, a pair of parallel disposed arms pivoted to the handle and head, forming a swinging connection between the same, and formed with a yoke or bail to provide a pressure receiving portion, and a spring secured to the handle and having its free end engaging the inner portion of said bail or yoke.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADAM J. SCHOENBORN.
Witnesses:
