DAVID R. HAWLEY, OF SEBRING, OHIO, ASSIG-NQR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES SIMPSON,
OF SEBRING, OI-IIO.
SLIDING-JAlN WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed July 15, 1914. Serial No. 851,131.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID R. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sebring, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-J aw renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sliding jaw wrenches, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby the sliding jaw of the wrench can be quickly adjusted to the desired position with respect to the fixed jaw.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sliding jaw wrench, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a cross section on line XX of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 4 de; notes a shank having its forward and its rear edge smooth and the said shank 4 is rectangular in cross section.
The shank 4 intermediate its ends is formed with a longitudinally extending opening 5, and said shank has one edge of the end portion beveled as at 6, the said beveled portion 6 being on the rear edge of the shank, the forward edge of the shank eX- tending in the same plane from end to end. The beveled end portion of the shank terminates in a cylindrical peripherally threaded extension 7. The shank 4 is furthermore provided with a longitudinally extending pocket 8, which communicates -with the inner end of the opening 5, and the shank 4 is furthermore provided with a transverse opening 9, which registers with the pocket 8. The reference character 10 denotes a handle formed with a longitudinally extending opening. The wall 12 of the opening 11 extends in the same plane throughout, while a portion of that wall of the opening 11, which opposesthe wall 12 and which is indicated by the reference character 13 is beveled. The beveled edge 6 of the shank 4 is adapted to be positioned against the beveled portion 13 of that wall of the opening 11, which is opposite the wall 12. Mounted upon the threaded extension 7 and abutting against the handle 10 is a retaining nut 14-. The reference character 15 denotes a sliding jaw having an integral strap 16, which surrounds the shank 4, whereby the jaw 15 is slidably connected to said shank 4.
Projecting inwardly from the jaw 15 and extending into the opening 11 at a point between the shank 4 and the wall 12 is a stem 17 having its inner edge provided with teeth 18.
Extending transversely of the opening 5 is a shaft 19 upon which is rotatably mounted a toothed wheel 20, which permanently engages with the teeth 18, so that when the wheel 20 is rotated, the stem 17 will be shifted to adjust theposition of the sliding jaw 15. The sliding jaw 15 is retained in its adjusted position through the medium of a toothed locking member 21, which is mounted in the pocket 8 and bears against a coiled spring 22, which is also seated in the pocket 8, and said spring 22 normally maintains said member 21 in engagement with the teeth of the wheel 20 to prevent rotation of the latter. The member 21 is actuated through the medium of a pin 23, which pro jects through the opening 9 and also through an opening 24, formed in the handle 10, the opening 24 alining with the open ing 9.
When it is desired to release the toothed wheel 20, the member 21 is shifted toward the bottom of the pocket 8 by pressure upon the pin 23.
What I claim is A. sliding jaw wrench comprising a shank formed with a longitudinal extending opening and having a longitudinal pocket connected at one end with said opening, a handle mounted upon one end of the shank,
' Copies of this patent may be obtained for the shank and handle, and said shank and handle being provided with openings to permit of the shifting ofithe pin for actuating said locking member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID R. HAVVLEY.
