Be it known that I, FRANKLINM. Known, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin-and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which=the following is a specification, reference being had-to the accompanying draw lngs.
This invention relates to wrenches, and has for its primary object to provide a-du-- rably constructed wrench of the quick adjustable type, the several: parts of which are of relatively simple form so that the wrench in its entirety may be manufactured and sold at small cost;
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a wrench of the" above'type having a body orframe,a r0tatable adjusting member mounted in said frame, said frame having a fixed jaw at one end, and complementary jaws slidably mounted upon the frame, with which said adjusting member is operatively engaged.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved con= struction, combination and relative arran e= ment of the several parts as will be heremafter more fully described, subsequently claimed'and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate correspondin parts throughout the several views, and w erein Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention;

Referring to the drawings 5 designates the body of the wrench having an obliquely extending jaw 6 formed on one of its ends. The other end of the body is provided with a pair of arms 7 and 8 arranged in parallelism and spaced, and formed through the body is a cylindrical bore 9. This bore 9 connects the cone chamber or cavity 10 and the crotch 7 a of the space between said arms.
The wrench body 5 has an obliquely extending face 11, and at each edge of this face, a guide rib 12 is formed upon the body of the wrench. 13 designates an adjustable jaw which is disposed in confronting relation to the jaw 6, and is provided upon one end with parallel channels or grooves, indicated at 14, to receive the guide ribs 12.
Specification of Letters Patent:
This end face of the jaw 13 is also formed witha series of threadsor teeth 15.
A knurled or roughened cylinder is mountedin the space between the-arms 7 and 8', and one end of this cylinder is provided with an extension rod 16, which rotatably extendsthrough the bore 9. The other end of the cylinder is provided with a reduced terminal lug or stud 19, which rotatably engagesasooket formed'centrally in a cap 20. By this construction it will be seen that the cylinder may freely rotate, and without excessive'binding, and also may be rotated any' time while the-hand of the operator is in'enga'gement with the body of the wrench. The'reduced rod at" one end of the cylinder protrudes into the cone chamber, and on its terminal-a cone gear 17 is fixed. The teeth of this cone ear mesh with the teeth 15 of the slidabhe" jaw 13, so that when the cylinderis rotated in either direction, the slidable or movable jaw may be operated toward and from the fixed jaw. This cap member extends across the open end of the slot 8 and is suitably secured to the end of the body or frame 5. It will thus be seen that bymerely rotating the rod 16 with the fingers of the hand grasping the wrench, the jaw 13 can be very easily and quickly adjusted toward or from the fixed jaw 6 and disposed in proper spaced relation thereto for engagement with an object. I have herein shown the cone-gear 17 detachably secured to the end of the rod 16, though it will, of course, be understood that, if desired, these parts can be integrally formed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. The article is of great convenience and serviceability in practical use, and may be roughly handled without gettlng out of order. The device is also well adapted for use in places which are not easily accessible, as the movable wrench jaw can be readily adjusted by the fingers of the hand grasping the wrench.
