WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,915, dated March 8, '1904.
Application filed November 3, 1903. Serial No. 179,720. (No model.)
7 To all whom it may concern:
I I pivot-jaw wrenches; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpenslve construction of wrench which can be quickly and easily adjusted and when once adjusted will remain firm in that position.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional 5 VlBW on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. 1
In constructing a wrench in accordance with my invention I employ a shank A, which may be of any desired length and thickness and which is shaped into the rigid jaw B at one 3 end, and at the opposite end the shank is enlarged, as shown at C, said enlarged portion having a V-shaped slot D produced therein, thereby providing two rigid jaws E and F, the face of'said jaws being arranged upon an inclination, as shown, and the jaw F is provided with teeth, while the jaw E is preferably smooth. The shank A is provided with integral ears G, which are arranged upon opposite sides and project a considerable distance 4 beyond the upper face of the shank, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1, and pivoted between the said ears is the pivot-jaw H, the inner face of the free end of which is provided with teeth, as shown at H, while the opposing faceB of the rigid jaw B is smooth or devoid of teeth. A leaf-spring is secured to the upper face of the shank by means of bolts I, said end being secured between the ears G, and the free end of said spring bears upon the under side of the pivot-jaw at a point slightly in advance of its central portion for the purpose of normally holding the said pivot-jaw open or extended. A keeper K, also integral with the rigid jaw, extends over the forward end of the pivot-j aw and limits its outward movement, and sliding upon end with depending legs L Which slide upon opposite sides of the pivot-jaw, said legs carrying a pin M, which works in a longitudinal slot M, produced in the pivot-jaw and extending parallel with the upper face thereof, said slot and pin serving to limit the front and rear movements of the wedge-block. It will thus be seen that in order to adjust the wrench it is only necessary to press the pivot-j aw toward the rigid jaw and then slide the wedge-block forwardly or rearwardly to the proper position, and the moment pressure is removed from the pivot-jaw the'spring I will force the said pivot jaw downwardly, bringing the wedgedolock into engagement with the keeper and securely lock the pivot-jaw in its adjusted position. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench of the kind described comprising a shank having a fixed jaw integral therewith, integral ears and an integral keeper, a pivoted jaw arranged within the keeper and between the ears, a spring secured to the shank between the ears, the free end of which is adapted to bear upon the inner side of the pivot-jaw and a wedge-block adapted to slide upon the outer face of the pivot-jaw, the inclined face of said jaw and connected to the said depending legs, as and for the purpose described.
