Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo DANIEL S. COE, OF NEW HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO CHAIIN MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN vlsEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,404, dated July 1, 1573; application filed March 1,1873.'l
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DANIEL S. CoE, of New Hartford, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bench-Vise, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved vise, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig.- 2 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line x rv, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved benchvise, which shall be so constructed that the movable jaw may move back and forth exactly parallel with the other or stationary jaw, and which shall be simple in construction, strong, and durable. The invention consists in the improvement of vises, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents the front or stationary jaw, the base of which is securely bolted to the bench. B is the inner or movable jaw, the lower end of which enters and moves back and forth in a groove, a', milled or otherwise formed in the upper side of the base of the jaw A, as shown iu Figs. l and 2. Upon the inner side of the jaw A is formed a round bar, C, which is made hollow, and is slotted upon its lower side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bar C passes through and ts into a hole in the movable jaw B, so as to serve as a bearing for said jaw B to slide back and forth upon.
D is a screw, which is swiveled to the jaw A, and to its outer end is attached the lever by which it is turned. The screw D passes longitudinally through the cavity of the bar C, and through a nut, Erformed upon the jaw B, and tting into the cavity of the-bar C, the neck of said nut passing through the slot ot' the bar C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. F is a screw having a left-screw thread formed upon it, and which is swiveled to the lower part of the stationary jaw A. The screw F is placed parallel with the screw D, and passes through a screw-hole in the lower part of the jaw B.
The inner ends of the screws D F revolveI in bearings in the yoke G, which also holds thc said screws and the bar C in their proper relative positions. Upon the inner ends of' the screws D F are secured small gear-wheels H, the teeth of which mesh into each other, so that by turning` the right screw D the left screw F will be turned in the opposite direction, and the two screws will work together to carry the movable jaw B back and forth, exactly parallel with the stationary jaw A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination ot' the yoke G with the bar C, the right screw D and the left screw F, substantially as herein shown and described.
WVitnesses: DANIEL S. COE.
O. S. THOMPSON, J. S. WISEWALL.
