Description

UNITED STATES 'r OFFICE.
ALFRED H. WAGNER, OF PRAIRIE CITY, ILL., ASSIGOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM J. RANDOLPH, LEVI DAY, AND ADAM HARSHBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHE-CHUCKS.
Specifcationrforming part of Letters Patent No. 116,649, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. WAGNER, of Prairie City, in the county of McDonough and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chucks for Lathes; and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ot' a self-centering chuck for the use of jewelers, machinists, Ste., and other purposes.
In order to ena-ble others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing', in which Figure l is a plan view, the top plate being removed; and Fig. 2 is a side view of my chuck.
A represents a box or slotted block, provided with a screw, B, for inserting in the lathe. In
this box are pivoted two jaws, C C. Each qjaw works on its own center a. and into the other, at the base, by one or more cogs, b, in such a way that, if either jaw be pushed to the center, the other must meet it there; and as there is no spring or any screw-thread to wear out, and thus lose the power of perfect work, it must be necessarily a perfect tool at all times. Through the jaws, outside of the front end of the box A, passes a screwbolt, D, surrounded between the jaws by a spiral spring, d, to force` them apart, and on the end of said bolt is a thumb-nut, E, to force the jaws together.
H avin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the box A and screw B, thejaws C C, each working on its own center and into each other by one or more cogs, b, and regulated by the screw D, spring d, and nut E, all constructed'and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this L1th day of April, 1871.
ALFRED H. VAGNER.
