AARON KERRY, OF MARYSVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO MYRON MILLS, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED VISE AND DRILL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 591,135, dated October 5, 1897. Application filed January 11,1e97. Serial No. 618,807. (No modelJ To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON KERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Vise and Drill, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction of a combined vise and drill of such a construction that it can be attached to an ordinary table or bench for use as a vise, or attached to any piece of work either directly or by means of the vise for use as a drill.
The invention further consists inthe particular construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the drawings and claimed.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal section through the drill-shaft and chuck. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing it in use in connection with a clamping-jaw attached to a table or plank. Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing one of the jaws, illustrating the construction of the actuating device for the jaws.
In a general way my invention comprises a yoke and swiveled drill-stock, vise, or clamping-jaws on either side thereof, means for actuating the jaws, for actuating the drill, and for feeding the drill, and devices for supporting the device as a whole in difierent positions for different classes of work.
In Fig. l I have shown the device intended for use as an ordinary bench-vise.
The yoke A is preferably composed of two separated pieces secured together at the ends and having a socket or hearing in the middle in which the head B of a sleeve 0 is swiveled. This sleeve 0 is exteriorly screw-threaded, and on this is an adjustable feed-sleeve D, which abuts against the chuck or collar E, in which the end of the drill-shaft is detacha bly engaged. This drill-shaft likewise passes through the sleeve 0 and is provided with an actuating-crank G, which likewise has a ratchet-and-pawl engagement with the shaft. In the end of the collar or chuck E the drill H is adapted to be secured by anysuitable means, such as by the set-screw shown. Upon either side of the yoke A are pivoted the jaws I. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 I have shown one of these jaws provided with the ear a, apertured in line with an aperture in the corresponding ears hen the side of the "bench and with a cross-plate J, adapted to fit into a socketed bracket 0 on the top of the bench, a pin being put through the alined apertures in the ears a h. 'The device will be held firmly to the bench, so that it may be used as a vise, or so that anything clamped between the jaws may be drilled, as shown in Fig. 1. p
A clamping device for the jaws preferably consists of the two links K, pivoted to one jaw and extending through the guides K on the sides of the other jaw. These links at the end are provided, preferably,witl1 the slots L, through which pass the pins M on the screwblock N. O is a screw engaging through this block and abutting against one of the jaws, being prevented from endwise movement in relation to such jaw by any suitable means, such as the set-screw P, engaging in a groove in the end of the screw 0. The jaws are provided on the inner faces of the clamping part with the grooves Q. In case this is desired to be used for drilling articles on a table or bench it may be ,done by clamping the jaws upon one member of a double clamp R, (shown in Fig. 3,) which issecured to the table by the clamping-screw R. In this case the slots Q engage upon ribs T on the sides of the table-clamp, and, if desired, the article may be clamped on the table at the same time by the action ofthe screw B. Other uses may be made of this device, as it can be directly attached to many articles to be drilled-such, for instance, as to beams or frames in buildings and to shafts, parts of machines, 850. Experience has demonstrated that it is an exceedingly useful and satisfactory device for shop, factory, and farm use and for contractors or others.
What I claim as my invention is-= 1. The combination of a yoke, jaws hinged thereto, means for actuating the jaws, a drill, a drill-stock swiveled in said yoke and held erally, a drill-shaft working in said sleeve and provided at one end with the drill-chuck and at the other end with operating means, and
a feed-sleeve D working on said screw-threadt ed sleeve and abutting against said chuck, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a yoke composed of two separated plates, a drill-stock journaled between them, and adapted to swing laterally, and two jaws pivoted between the ends of said yoke-plates, one on either side of the drill-stock, separated bars connecting the upper ends of the jaws, and means for drawing the jaws together or separating them.
at. The combination of the yoke, and the jaws, of the drill-stock swiveled in the yoke and comprising the sleeve 0, exteriorly screwthreaded, the adjustable sleeve D thereon and the collar or chuck E against which the adjustin g-sleeve D abuts, for the purpose described.
5. The combination with the yoke, the jaws, and the drill between the jaws, of the separated bars K pivoted at one end to one jaw, slidingly engaging in lateral hearings in the other jaw, a screw-block loosely mounted in the ends of these bars and a screw passing through the block and engaging the jaw for the purpose described.
6. The combination with a clamp having ribs T thereon, of a combined drill and vise having jaws provided with grooves Q in their inner faces adapted to engage said ribs, and means on one jaw for attachment to a bench or other support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AARON KERRY.
