8 Claims.
The invention relates to mechanics end wrenches and it aims to provide improved wrenches so constructed that a wrench of one size may be rigidly connected with one of another size to obtain increased leverage. I am aware that it is quite common for mechanics to merely interengage the jaws of two end wrenches for this purpose, but this places excessive strain on said jaws and moreover, the wrenches are prone to slip out of engagement or swing out of alinement, often causing the user to strike and injure his hand upon adjacent machine parts. My invention, however, provides for a rigid connection between the two wrenches, of such form that there is no danger of said wrenches slipping out of engagement with each other or swinging out of alinement, the two wrenches being separable only by relative endwise sliding.
With the above object in View, the invention 'resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figs. 1 and 2 are side elevations showing the opposite sides of two of the improved wrenches connected with each other.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the connected wrenches.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a disassembled perspective view.
In the drawing above briefly described, preferred details of construction have been shown for illustrative purposes, but it is to be understood that variations may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed. Furthermore, while only two wrenches are shown, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in wrench sets containing any desired number of wrenches. Then too, while double end wrenches are shown, that is, wrenches with jaws at both ends, it is not essential that all wrenches of the set be provided with jaws at both ends.
Two wrenches 6 and 6' are shown, said wrenches having flat heads I and 1 at one end, said heads each having two jaws, the jaws of the head I being shown at 8 and those of the head I being shown at 8'. The elongated shank or handle 9 of the wrench 6 is provided with a laterally turned portion l0 which is integrally joined to the head 1, and the handle or shank 9' of the wrench 6 is provided with a lateral shank portion l0 integrally joined to the head I.
The two heads I and I are adapted to be overlapped longitudinally, the shank portion to of the wrench 6 being then receivable between the jaws 8' of the wrench 6, and the shank portion ID of said wrench 6 being then receivable between the jaws 8 of said wrench 6. The shank portions I0 and ID are suitably shouldered at H and H to abut the outer sides of the jaws engaged therewith, preventing lateral separation or slipping of the two wrenches and holding them definitely in alinement. Obviously, the wrenches are engaged with each other by overlapping their heads I and I and relatively sliding said wrenches inwardly, and they can be disconnected only by relative outward sliding. Thus, the two connected wrenches constitute a long shank or handle for the jaws I2 of the wrench 6 or the jaws l2 of the wrench 6', the shank construction adjacent these jaws l2 and I2 being preferably identical with that above described, allowing engagement of these ends of the wrenches with other wrenches.
It will be seen from the foregoing that simple and inexpensive, yet eflicient and desirable construction has been provided for carrying out the object of the invention, and while preferred details have been shown, attention is again invited to the possibility of making variations within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:--
1. Two open-end wrenches having ends to overlap longitudinally, said ends being each provided with two conventional nut-engaging jaws projecting longitudinally therefrom and with a rigid portion behind and projecting laterally with respect to said jaws, said lateral rigid portion of each wrench being of a size for snug reception between said jaws of the other wrench to hold the two wrenches against relative angling in either direction in which they may be swung in use, the other end of at least one of said wrenches being provided with jaws for which the two wrenches form a long shank when connected.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1; said lateral projections being provided with shoulders to abut the outer sides of the jaws engageable therewith, preventing lateral separation of the two wrenches when connected.
3. Two open-end wrenches each having a shank and a head at one end of said shank provided with two conventional nut-engaging jaws projecting longitudinally from said head, said wrenches each having a lateral shank portion integrally joined to said head and disposing the shank and head in ofiset relation, the two heads being adapted to overlap longitudinally, said lateral shank portion of each wrench being of a size for snug reception between the two jaws of the other wrench to connect said wrenches and hold them against relative angling in either direction in which they may be swung in use, the other end of at least one of said wrenches being provided with jaws for which the two wrenches form a long shank when connected.
4. A structure as specified in claim 3; said lateral shank portions being provided with shoulders to abut the outer sides of the jaws engageable'therewith, preventing lateral separation of the two wrenches when connected.
5. An open-end wrench having conventional longitudinally projecting nut-engaging jaws and a rigid portion behind and projecting laterally with respect to said jaws for snug reception between the jaws of substantially a duplicate overlapped wrench, to connect the two wrenches for increased leverage and hold them against relative angling in either direction in which they may be swung in use.
6. A structure as specified in claim 5; said rigid lateral portion having a shoulder to abut the outer side of one of the jaws of the other wrench.
7. An open-end wrench having a flat head at one end provided with two integral nut-engaging jaws projecting longitudinally from said head, and a shank having a lateral end portion integrally joined to the inner end of said head and disposing the shank and head in offset relation, said lateral end of said shank being of a size for snug reception between the jaws of substantially a duplicate overlapped wrench to connect the two wrenches for increased leverage and holding them against relative angling in either direction in which they may be swung in use.
8. A structure as specified in claim 7; said lateral end of said shank having a shoulder to abut the outer side of one of the jaws of the other wrench.
