Description

Oct. 2, 1934. F. ZYGMUNTY 1,915,343
TOOL HANDLE Original Filed March 17, 1931 Patented Get. 2, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 17, 1931, Serial No. 523,287 Renewed February 26, 1934 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in tool holders or handles, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a handle afiording a firm grip.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a tool handle of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, yet durable and eflicient in operation.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a tool handle equipped with vertically extending torsionally twisted outer ribs or ridges to afford a firm gripping surface.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a tool handle equipped at its lower end with a bi-partite outer sleeve allowing the transversal passage of a pin for securing the parts in their assembled position.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description proceeds and will then be more speciflcally defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a tool handle or holder constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a cap.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line r-4 of Figure 1.
Fig. 5 illustrates the tool holding socket and sleeve.
Fig. 6 is a top plan View thereof seen in the direction of arrows 6-6 of Figure 5.
As illustrated, a tool shank 19 has a spirally fluted upper end, and wood pieces 10 are placed between the spiral flutes 11 to form the tool handle. To hold the wood pieces of the handle between the flutes, a cap 14 is provided at the upper end having a central opening 13 formed therein into which engages a trunion 12 formed by the upper ends of the wood pieces, and the depending flange 15 of the cap has inner recesses 16 to engage the upper ends of the flutes 11.
A split sleeve 20 is provided at the lower end to hold the parts assembled and a pin 21 holds the parts of the sleeve in place about the head 18 of the shank 19.
The operation of my simple device will be readily understood from the specification and drawing without further detailed explanation.
It will be understood that I have described the preferred form of my device only and that I may make such changes in its construction as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a tool as described, a tool shank having a spirally fluted upper end, wood pieces placed between the spiral flutes to form a handle, a cap for holding the wood pieces between the flutes together at their upper ends, a split sleeve to hold the lower ends of the wood pieces together, and a pin for holding the parts of said sleeve about a head on said shank.
2. In a tool, a shank having a fluted upper end, elongated filler blocks located between the flutes of said shank to form with the outer surfaces of said flutes a smooth handle, a cap at the top of said shank for holding the tops of said blocks, a sleeve ferrule for holding the bottoms of said blocks, and means for securing said ferrule to said shank.
FRANK ZYGMUNT.
