W. JAMES. COMBINED HATGHET AND ADZ.
APPLICATION I'I-LED JULY 17, 1911.

[NVENTOR Attorney COLUMBIA PLANOCIRAPH (10., WASHINGTON, D. c.
EDWARD W. JAMES, 0F MECHANICSBURG, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED HATCHET AND ADZ.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedJuly 17, 1911.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912. Serial No. 638,861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. JAMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanicsburg, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hatchets and Adzes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in a combined hatchet and adz, so constructed that the cutting blade may be held at difierent angles to the handle.
The invention comprises various details .of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure l is a perspective view showing the device adjusted for use as a hatchet. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it adjusted as an adz, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view longitudinally showing the apparatus adjusted as shown in Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of the device having a recess A formed in the shank portion thereof in which a sliding locking bolt B is mounted, having a notch B formed in'one edge thereof in which the lug D upon the pivotal lever D is adapted to engage to hold the bolt B in a locked position. The tool is-provided with a hatchet head E which is recessed and is adapted to receive the cylindrical portion H of the blade H. Said cylindrical portion of the blade H is provided with a series ofholes J for the reception of the end of the locking bolt B, as shown clearly in Fig. .3 of the drawings. The lever D is mounted upon a pin d and its free end is normally held in a locked position by means of a spring catch 0 which is fastened at 0 near one end of the handle.
The adjustment of my combined hatchet and adz will be readily understood and isas follows :When it is desired to use the same as an ordinary hatchet, the blade is held securely in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Should it be desired to turn the blade and hold the same at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1, it may be done by the operator releasing the free end of the lever D, swinging the same upon its pivot d, causing the bolt B to be withdrawn from the hole formed in the shank portion of the blade, after which the blade may be turned at right angles to its former position, thus presenting one of the holes J in alinement with the bolt to receive the same when thrown forward by swinging the lever D back to its normal position, thus securely holding the blade in its adjusted position.
What I claim to be new is In combination with a hatchet having a hammer and handle which are integral, the rear end of the hammer having a cylindrical recess, and the rear edge of the handle having a recess with a communicating channel intermediate same, and the recess in the rear end of the hammer, a hatchet blade provided with a cylindrical shank portion, the,
circumference of which has holes formed therein, said shank portion adapted to be mounted within the said cylindrical recess,
a shoulder formed at the inner end of the shank portion, of the hatchet head and bear-- ing against the rear end of the hammer about its recess portion, a longitudinally movable locking bolt mounted within the said channel and adapted to engage at one end one of the holes in the shank of the hatchet blade, and its other end widened forming a shoulder to limit the movement of the bolt in one direction, one edge of said widened portion having. a recess formed therein, an angle lever pivoted Within the is flush with the recessed face of the handle, recess in the handle, and having its short as set forth. l0 arm engaging the recess in said widened In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my portion of the bolt, a spring mounted withsignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
in the recess in the handle, and extending EDWARD W. JAMES. through an aperture therein, and secured Witnesses:
to the handle, its other end being fastened LoUIs Gr. JAMEs,
to the outer face of the lever, which latter FRANK E. JAMES.
