TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,825, dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed October 21, 1903- Serial No. 177,887. (No model.)
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAsoHIL D. CONVERSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to tool-handles, and more particularly to compass-saw handles.
It comprises a recessed tool-handle having the flanges at the lateral margins of the recess, each pierced by a hole tranversely the longitudinal plane of the handle at a proper level above the bottom or bed of said recess, and a wire bolt rotatably entered therethrough and bent to form a cam or a cam and a lever for its manipulation; and its objects are to improve the efliciency and cheapen the cost of handles for compass-saws and for other tools to which the same may be adapted, all which, with the principles, construction, and operation of the same, will hereinafter be more clearly set forth and distinctly claimed.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tool-handle, illustrating its adaptation to compass-saws; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the compass-saw removed; Fig. 3, an end view showing crosssection of saw-blade on line 1* .r; and Fig. 4, a similar view showing saw -blade removed, which several views show the principles, construction, form, and operation of my invention.
Like characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures.
A is ahandle-bodyofknownlink-like form, but which may be of any form suitably recessed or socketed for reception of the tool to be used and having each of the lateral flanges c a pierced by a hole for reception of a wire B to form a tool securing or holding cam, and C (in the present instance) is a compass-saw blade.
(1 is a flattened bed onthe inside of the front end of the handle, which forms a wall of a recess b and against which the cam bend 0 of B operates to forcibly cramp and secure the compass-saw blade C when the curved lever end (Z of the wire cam B is turned in the prescribed direction.
The cam-wire B, which is preferably provided with a head at one end, is straight originally and is first inserted and rotatably fitted through said transverse holes in the flanged portions 6 e of the handle at its forward end and on such a line as to leave a suflicient space between it and the wall a for insertion of the shank of the compass-saw or other tool, and then by suitable appliances the end (Z is bent to form a lever, and at 0, between the flanges c c, this wire is also bent or depressed, while the lever (Z is held in the position shown by Figs. 1 and 3 to form a cam. (Distinctly seen in Figs. 2 and Having been constructed, formed, and proportioned as shown, the operation of my invention is as follows: The cam-lever (Z of the wire cam B is turned up right-angularly to the plane of the tool-handle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, which turns the cam bend 0 out to the position shown by Fig. 2, giving clearance in the recess Z; for insertion and adjustment of the compass-saw or other tool-shank, which when inserted may be securely clamped and held in the handle A by turning the camlever (Z down to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, causing the cam bend c to forcibly engage and pinch the saw-blade or tool-shank against the wall or bend a. To release the saw or tool, the lever D would be returned to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tool-handle of the character described provided with a recess with flanges at the lateral margins of the latter each pierced by a hole transversely the longitudinal plane of the handle and on a line above the level of the bed of said recess, in combination with an integrally-formed wire cam and lever entered and rotatably titted through the transverse holes in said flanges.
2. A tool-handle ot' the character described provided with a recess with flanges at the lateral margins of the latter each pierced by to this specification in the presence of two subahhole trl'imsveirsely ithe longituldinlal pllane of scribing Witnesses. t e ianc e anc on a ine above tie eve of the w 1 1 bed of said recess, in combination with a Wire MASLHIL CONVERbE 5 cam entered and rotatably fitted through the Witnesses:
transverse holes in said flanges. FRANK S. APPLEMAN,
Intestimony whereof Ihave signed my name 0. E. WEBB.
