CHARLES S. LELAND, OF MOUNT DESERT, MAINE.
' PuT'TY KNIFE AND CHISEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 27, 1905- 14 1 N 271,606
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. LELAND, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Mount Desert, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Putty-Knives and Chisels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in glaziers" tools, and more particularly to a combined putty-knife and chisel.
In setting glass it is necessary to employ some sharp implement to remove the old putty, and where several different tools are employed much loss of time and inconvenience is occasioned.
The object of this invention is to produce a device of this character which will combine a putty-knife and chisel in one handle, so that either one of them may be employed, as desired.
F or a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a,
knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and acin whichigure 1 is a perspective View of the device, showing the putt -knife in position for use. Fig. 2 is a topp an view showing the blade as swung around in an intermediate position. Fig. 3 is ,a lon itudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detai perspective view showing the recess ger-piece. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numerals 1 designate the side pieces of the handle, which are secured to the scales 2, one end of the handle being provided with a butt-piece 3, while at the opposite end the scales are bent back upon themselves at 4 in place of the usual ring. The blade 5 is pivoted at an intermediate point 6 between the sides of the handle. One end 7 of the blade 5 is beveled at 8, so as to be employed as a chisel, While thinner and is adapted to be employed as a One of the handles is provided with a recess 9, in which a spring-catch is located. This catch comprises a piece of spring metal 10, one end of which is rigidly secured to the handle, while the opposite end is provided with a .lug 11, which passes be disenga in the handle and the fin' designed to swing on the opposite end is somewhat through the recess 9 and engages o enings 12 in the blade 5. By this means eit er end of the blade 5 can be securely held within the handle and the opposite end thereby held in operative position. A fin er-piece 13 is employed, comprising a shan 14, formed with Patented May 22, 1906.
an opening through which the lug 11 passes,
and a hea 15, which is shown as sem1c1r0ular in shape, so as to be easily engaged by the fingers of the operator. This finger-piece 13 is so arran ed that by either head inward or pullin it out the lug 11 will ed from t e openings 12 in the blade 5 an the latter turned around, so as to lock either the putty-knife or the chisel in operative position. The edges of the blade 5 are beveled at 16, said beveled edges being adapted to engage with the lu 11 in order to force same outward when t e blade 5 is swung around upon the pivot 6. In employing this tool the chisel 7 is used to remove the old putty which has hardened, while the putty-knife is used in connection with the fresh putty.
It will be readily understood that with this device the two tools are combined in one and that there will be no necessity for carrying around several tools, which are a great inconvenience and which are always liable to be lost.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime as new is 1. A device of the character described com prising a handle provided with a recess in one of its sides, a member pivoted at a point intermediate its length to said handle, and having its respective ends formed so as to serve as different tools, said member being the handle so that one of its ends will be received therein and the other extended therefrom, a sprin -catch secured at one end to the handle an provided at its other end with a lug accommodated by said recess and designed to engage the pivot member at either end thereof for the purpose set forth, and a fin er-piece mounted on said s ring-catch and esigned to lie flush with t e handle in the recess thereof and to be withdrawn from said recess in position to be grasped to withdraw the lug out of engagement with the pivot member.
pressing the 2. A device of the characteridescribed comeither being designed for insertion in the han- .a sprin -catch secured at one en dle with the other end extending therefromJ withdrawn from said recess in position to he 10 to the handle an provided at its other end 'with a 111' accommodated by said'recess and designed to engage the said tool member, and a'fingergrasped, as and for the purpose set forth. In testifnony whereof 'I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. o
