Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [80.187, dated July 25, 1876; application tiled February 28,1876.
To all whom it 'may concern: y
Be it known that I, CHARLES G BAETLETT, of Medford, Middlesex county, Massachusetts,
have invented a new and Improved Combinaputty-knife and screw-driver, for painters,
Snc., to be used in opening doors where there are no knobs, and also in taking off knobs, es-
cutcheons, Src., making thereby an implement,
that has ot' necessity to be carried along by painters, of greater usefulness.
The invention consists in combining a putty-knife and vscrew-driver in one implement, securing the sliding and spring-acted screwdriver to the handle when not in use.
In-the drawing, A represents the handlcof my improved putty-knife and screw-driver; B, the knife, attached to one end of the handle, and C, the sliding screw-driver that is :applied to. the hollow end ot' the handle opposite to that to which the putty-knife is at tached.
The knife B is set in a detachable, manner into the handle A, by being inserted from the side into a dovetailed slot of the same, the lslot being narrower at one end than at thev other, so that the tapering shank of the blade will come to a perfect lit, and be firmly set in the dovetail socket-recess. A fastening from the notches of the screw-driver, so as to be thrown forward and locked rigidly in position for use.
The catch may be operated from the end or other part of the handle, as desired, thev screw-driver being moved back into the handle when not required for use. The convenient arrangement of the screw-driver in the hollow1 end of the handle allows it to be thrown out for use, or to be carried back, as required by the exigencies of the work, combining thereby two separate tools in one device, and forming an improved tool for painters, glaziers, carpenters, and others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patentf j 1. The combination of a putty-knife with a screw-driver, to form one tool, substantially in the manner described. 25. The combination of the handle, having a dovetailed socket-recess, narrower at one end, with -a tapering shank of a putty-knife,
and with 'a fastening cross-pin to secure the shank rigidly, but detachably, to the handle, substantially as specified. 3. The combination of the hollow handle 0f a putty-knife with a sliding springacted screw-driver, and locking spring-catch, sub stantially as specified.
