SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,895, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed December 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILBUR \VEBSTER, of East Jalt'rey, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Extension CuttingBlade Ilandle, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the device on line .20 .r, Fig. 3, showing the edge of a cutting-blade. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of the device on line y y, Fig. 3, showing the side of a cutting-blade. Fig. 3 is a plan of the handle holding a cutting-blade on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view, in perspective, ofthe holding and adjusting block and screw.

This invention belongs to that class of devices that are designed for holding flat eutting-tools.
The invention consists ot'two longitudinallygrooved or semi-tubular clamps and a hold ing or adjusting block contained in a hollow handle and held by a screw, said clamps having lockingears at or near their tops, and having their lower ends mortised and tenoned to engage with and in corresponding tenons and mortises in the holding-block.
In the drawings, A represents the hollow handle, provided with a ferrule, a, that has two slots, b 1), formed in its inner edge. B B are the grooved or semi-tubular clamps, provided with ears 0 c at one end and with mortiscs (I (Z and tenons ff at the lower end. U is the holding-block, whose position is in the butt of the handle A, said block being provided with tenons g g and mortises h h, in and with which the corresponding mortiscs (l d and tenonsffof the clamps engage when in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Dis a screw, whose head 6 covers the butt-end of the handle A, and whose shank enters the female screw formed in the block U, by which means the said block l and the clamps B 1; may be adjusted, drawn down, or released, as 5 the operator may desire, so that the cutting blade ll, which is placed between the said clamps I; B, may be tightly grasped by them, and may at any time be released or loosened and pushed farther in or drawn out from the said clamps, according to the wear upon the blade or the requirements of the work to which the blade is applied.
The holding-block 0 being separate from the clamps I B is a point of great advantage in this device, inasmuch as, being the least durable of the parts on account of the wear on the screwthread, it can be rejected and replaced by another without renewal of any of the other parts.
Another especial advantage of this device lies in the ears 0 c, which engage or lock in the ferrule-slots b I), and prevent the blade E from turning. The clamps B B being semitubular, they grasp the cutting-blade more firmly and with less liability to spring than if they were flat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the clamp B B, having tenons and mortiscs (If, the block C, having tcnons g g and mortises 11. h, and the screw 1), with the hollow handle, as and for the purpose described.
