E. EWAN.
HOOF- CLEANER AND TRIMMER.
No. 338,146. Patented Mar. 16, 1886. V
J) flljgwsm v Q NVEJVIO Q NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVAN EWAN, or BRIDGETON, NEW JERSEY.
HOOF CLEANER AND TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,146, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed January 14, 1886.- Serial No. 188,498. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EVAN EWAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Trimming Horses Hoofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use tl e same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my improved tool for trimming the hoofs of horses in operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tool,'an d Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to tools for trimming the hoofs of horses and similar animals; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a tong-shaped tool having an inwardly-bent sharp cuttingjaw and a blunt abuttingjaw, between which the rim of the hoof may be cut off, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the letters A and 13 indicate the handles of the jaws O and D, and the said handles are pivoted together at the points at which the handles and the jaws pass into each other, and one handle is provided with a flat curved spring, E, secured at its inner end to the handle, which spring bears with its free end against the other handle. The jaw 0 consists of a shank having a cross-head, F, the inner face, G, of which is concave and forming a segment, and the other jaw, D, consists of a flat plate formed with inwardly-bent flanges H H at its side edges. The flat shank I of the cutting-bit J fits between these flanges, and is provided with longitudinal slots K, with which slots it slides adjustably upon screws L, having their threaded ends fittingin screw-threaded perforations M in the flat jaw, and the inner end of the flat shank is formed with a notch, N,
which fits upon the curved shank of the jaw. The edge 0 of the inwardly-bent bit has a curve corresponding to the curve of the inner face of the blunt jaw, and the cutting-bit passes to the inside of the blunt jaw, bearing with its outer side against the inner side of the said blunt jaw. It will now be seen that when the hoof is held so that the cutting-bit may bear against the inner side of the rim of the hoof and the curved blunt jaw may bear against the curved outer side of the hoof, the said rim may be cut off by closing the jaws together by means of the handles, the jaws op erating with a combined cut and bite, and the curved jaw will support the rim of the hoof, preventing it from splitting while being trimmed.
The bit may be adjusted upon its screws so as to bear perfectly close against the inner side of the bluntjaw when thejaws are closed together, and the bit may be removed from the jaw and sharpened and repaired whenever it is necessary.
The notch in the inner end of the shank of the bit, bearing over the curved shank of the flat jaw, will serve to steady the bit in the jaw, preventing it from being twisted or displaced in its position between the flanges of the flat jaw.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a device for trimming the hoofs of animals by having a curved cutting-edge operated in conjunction with a blunt edge, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a tool for trimming the hoofs of horses, the combination of a concavely-curved blunt jaw with a flat jaw having flanges upon its side edges and a rectangularly-bent bit having a curved cutting-edge,a notched rear edge, and a slotted middle portion, and bolts for securing said bitadj ustabl y between the flanges of the flat jaw, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EVAN EVVAN.
