ANDREW M. ROBERTS, OE MITCHELL, OREGON.
TOOL FOR TRlNlNl-ING HORSES HOOFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,115, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed January 13, 1890. Serial No. 336,742. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it mfc/'zj concern: Beit known that I, ANDREW M. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchell, in the county of Crook and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Trimming Horses Hoofs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of blacksmiths tools which are used for trimming the hoofs of horses; and it has for its object to generally improve upon the construction, and at the same time render more durable and efiicient in operation this class of devices.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then speciiically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated. in the accompanying` drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating` like parts throughout both views, and in which drawingsp Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hooftrimming tool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinalsection of the same.
Reference now being had tO the details of the drawings by letter, A and B represent the main operating-handles. The handle A is provided at its end with the horizontally-flattened and substantially triangular portion A2, the edges of which are beveled, so as to form the cutting-edges A3.
C is a block of metal, which is secured to the upper face of the portion A2, extending transversely across the same immediately to the rear of the cutting-edges A3, where it serves as an anvil and guide for the trimming-knife, as will presently appear.
rear arms of the semi-elliptical plates D above the 'upper edge of the handle A. The opposite end of the handle is iiattened and curved downwardly and provided with the verticallycutting edge E at right angles to the body of the lever. 4
F F are steel arms pivotally connecting the downwardly-curved end B3 of the lever B with the lever E at a point adjacent to the operative end of said lever. The handle A is adapted to move freely between the arms F, as will be readily understood.
G is a dat spring secured at one of its ends to the lower face of the handle A, while its free end is adapted to bear upon the upper face of the handle B, as shown.
The pivots which retain the lever E in place are made removable, so that the said lever may be readily and easily removed when it may be necessary to sharpen the cutting-edge of the tool.
The Operation of the tool is simple, and from the foregoing description will be readily understood. The double-edgedtriangular eX- tension A2 serves as a Very convenient tool for use in cleaning the hoof, and the system of leverage is such as to render `it possible to quickly and -accurately trim the hardest of hoofs with the exercise of but little power upon the handles A and B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the handle B, of the lever pivotally connected with said handle and carrying a cutting-edge, and the handle A, independent of the lever and handle and carrying an anvil and guided between the connections between the lever and the handle B, substantially as specied.
2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination, with the handle B and the IOO lever E, of the arIns F F, pivotally connecting the lever and handle, the plates D, pivotally connecting the lever and handle, and the handle A, Working between said arms and plates, and a spring between the handles, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device for the purpose described, the combination, With the handle B and the lever E, carrying a cutting-edge, of the parallel arms pivotally connecting said handle and lever, the substantially semicircular plates D,
pivotally connected at one end to one end of i
