HORSESHOE-CALK SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,640, dated May 20, 1902. Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,795- (No model- To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HALSTEAD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Leslie, in the county of Ingham, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Calk Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for sharpeningthe calks of horseshoes; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for sharpeningthe blunted or worn calks of horseshoes Without removing them from the hoof.
The above object is attained by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved horseshoe-calk sharpener, showing a horseshoe in position therein. Fig. 2 is a plan View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a front end elevation.
I Referring to the characters of reference, 1. and 2 designate the operative handles, which are pivoted together at 3. Each handle is provided with a projection f extending forward of the point of pivot, to which the arms 5 and 6, respectively, are pivota lly coupled, as at 7. Uniting the arms 5 and 6 near their forward ends are the links 8, located on either side thereof and pivoted to said arms at their opposite ends, as shown at 9. The links 8 establish a flexible union between the arms 5 and 6, and the pivots 9 form the points of fulcrum upon which said arms oscillate when actuated through the opening and closing of the handles 1 and 2. I
On the forward end of the arm 5 is a jaw 10, carrying therein a knife or hit 11, which is made adjustable through the medium of the set-screw 12, which passes through a slot 13 in thejawandengagessaidknife. The outerend of the arm 6 is provided with a projecting table or rest 14, against whichthe horseshoe 15 is adapted to lie in the path of the knife 11, with the calk 16 thereof extending inwardly. Passing through said table is a setscrew 17, the upper end of which is adapted to engage the calk of the shoe to maintain the shoe in place during the operation of cutting. The arrangement is such that as the handles 1 and 2 are separated the knife in the jaw 10 is retracted, permitting the calk of the shoe to be placed in position upon the table 14, when upon closing the handles the arms 5 and 6 are actuated upon their fulcrums to bring their outer ends together and operate the knife 11, so as to cut a beveled piece from the calk of the shoe, thereby rendering the calk sharp. It will be seen that the point of the knife stands at an angle, so asto effect a drawing out when acting upon the calk of the shoe.
It will now be understood that by means of this device the calksof'horseshoes may be quickly sharpened without the necessity of removing them from the hoof.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of the operative handles, the arms pivoted thereto, the pivotal links connecting said arms, one of said arms having a jaw at its forward end, a movable knife seated in said jaw, the other of said arms having a projecting table extending into the path of said knife and having means for securing a horseshoe thereon.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of the operative handles pivoted together and having. projections extending beyond the point of .pivot, operative arms pivoted to the projections of the handles, links connecting said arms and pivoted at their opposite ends thereto, a jawin the outer end of one of said arms, a knife mounted in said jaw and adjustably secured therein, a table projecting from .the otherof said arms in the path of said knife,'and a set-screw in said table adapted toengage aud'confine the calk of the horseshoe.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. HALSTEAD.
