J. LUSSIER. DEVICE FOR SHARPENING HORSESHOE OALKS.
No. 469,707. Patented Mar. 1, 1892.
NITED STATES ATIENT rrrcn.
JOHN LUSSIER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS,,ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH E. B ONIN, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING H'ORSESHOE-CALKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,707, dated March 1-, 1892. Application filed October 27, 1891. Serial No. 409,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN LUSSIER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalk-Sharpening Devices for Anvils, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an anvil showing my improved device in position; and Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, end elevations, showing a horseshoe in position in the clamp.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a treadleactuated clamp for holding horseshoes on an anvil While sharpening the calks and tips; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readilyunderstood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the anvil, which is of the ordinary form and construction, and is mounted on a base in the usual manner. The anvil is provided with the usual vertical hardy-hole in its quarter. A rectangular swage-block O has a tang d, fitted to enter the hardy-hole b. Said block has its outer edges beveled at ff. The lower end of the tang d is provided with lateral pivotopenings to receive detachable pins or pivots g g. The lever h is mounted on the pivot g,
and is bent or curved vertically to swing upward outside the anvil-quarter, said lever be ing provided with a head 11 on its free end, which practically registers with block adjacent the bevel f. Near its pivot the lever is provided with a segment-gear j. A similar lever D is mounted on the pivot g, and is geared at It to mesh with the gear j. The 1ever D has an upwardly-projecting arm provided with a head m, which is in position to engage the block 0 adjacent the bevel f. Said lever D is provided eccentrically on its pivot with a pendent arm 19, upon which a treadle H is adjustably mounted by means of a setscrew g.
In the use of my improvement the horseshoe M is disposed between the head m of the lever D and the block 0, the calkv of said shoe resting on the bevel f. By depressing the treadle H the vertical arm of the lever D is thrown inward, forcing its head against the shoe M and clamping it securely on the block. The call: 0 can be swaged for sharpening while in this position, the bevel f serving to form the bevel on the inner face of said calk. To shape the tips or guards at: of the shoe, it is disposed at the opposite side of the block 0, with said tip resting on the shorter bevel f; Depressing the treadle I-I throws the arm 19 of the lever D outward and moving the lever 7t inward to clamp the shoe against the block by means of the segment-gears j 70. The clamp described is applicable for holding the material and forming any sharp surfaces of the character described. By removing the pivots g g the levers can be readily detached from the tang of the block and said block re- .moved from the anvil.
The shape of the block 0 may be varied at will to correspond with the character of work to be performed, and the heads of the levers may also be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention, the primary object of which is to afford a clamping device for holding articles being operated upon against the swage or other tool.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim isr 1. The combination of a swage-block or similar tool provided with an elongated tang adapted to be projected through the hardyhole of an anvil, a treadle-actuated lever detachably pivoted to said tang and provided with ahead for. engaging said block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. vThe combination of a block provided with a tang adapted to be projected through the hardy-hole of an anvil, two clamping-levers detachably secured to said tang and provided with intermeshing segment-gears, the
ends of said levers being adapted to engage gage said tool, a pendent arm on said level, portions of said block, and a treadle on one and a treadle adjustable vertically on said [0 of said levers, substantially as and for the arm, substantially as described.
purpose set forth. I
5 3 A swage or similar anvil-tool provided J OI-IN LUSSIER.
with an elongated tang, in combination with Witnesses: a curved lever detaehably pivoted to said K. DURFEE,
tang and having its free end adapted to en- O M. SHAW.
