G. W. KOONS 8a W. H- METZGER.
SAW SETTING DEVICE. v
Patented Apr. 27, 1886.
ATTORNEY N. PEYERA Pholwutho rapbw, Walling! DJ;-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES \V. KOONS AND WILLIAM H. METZGER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
SAW-SETTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,585, dated April Application filed February 19, 1886. Serial No. 192,590. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. KOONS and WILLIAM H. METZGER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the several parts detached.
The present invention has relation to sawsets; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bed-plate or anvil, which may be substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, is provided with the beveled portion or lip a, which is for the purpose of providing a rest for the blade of a saw. To the sides of the bed-plate or anvil A is attached in any wellknown manner the hood or cap B, which may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as shown, its point or for ward portion is provided with the gagescrew I), which is located substantially as shown, and is for the purpose of regulating the set of the saw-teeth. This gage-screw is provided with the pointed end 0, which is for the purpose of assisting in holding the blade of a saw in proper position, so that the die or bar G will strike the tooth squarely.
The die or bar 0 is made of suitable spring metal and is attached to the handle D by means of the screw (1. The front or forward end of the die or bar O is provided with the notch or recess d, which is for the purpose of receiving and holding the top or upper end of the link E, said link E being substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as
shown, it passes through the bedplate or anvil A and embraces the arm F, as shown in Fig. 1.
The lever or handle G is substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, it is provided with the extension H, which fits into the socket H, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby forming a hinge or joint.
It will be seen that as the handles are brought together the die or bar C will be drawn down on the bed'plate or anvil A by means of the arm F and the link E. For the purpose of holding the link E in proper position, the recess 1 is provided. It will also be seen that by making the die or bar 0 of spring metal it will cause the handles to separate when they are released.
In case it is desired, a block of hard metal may be inserted in the bed-plate or anvil A, directly beneath the front or forward end of the die or bar 0.
The gage or guide J may be substantially of the form shown, plate or anvil A, and is held in proper position by means of the set screw K, and for the purpose of adjusting the gage or guide J the slot K is provided.
The magnifying-glass L is located in the hood, substantially as shown, and is for the purpose of more plainly showing the teeth of line saws.
It will be understood that the magnifyingglass is used only in small-sized saw-sets.
The hood B, when designed to have attached the magnifying-glass L, is elevated, so as to clear the parts located beneath said magnifying-glass. It will also be seen that the hood or cap B may, if desired, be attached to the forward end of the die or bar O.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the plate or anvil A, thedie or bar 0, formed of spring metal and provided with the notch or recess (1, the link E, embracing the die or bar O, and the arm or extension F, the levers D and G, and the hood or cap B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the plate or anvil and is located on the bed- A, the die or bar 0, the link E, embracing the die or bar 0, and the arm F, the hood or cap B, provided with the magnifying-glass L, the levers D and G, the extension H, and the 5 socket H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above We have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. KOONS. \VILLIAM H. ME'IZGER.
