To a whmn it may concern:
Be it known that -I, EMANUEL CHAINEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Florence and State of Vfisconsin, have invented a new and useful Saw-Set, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in saw-sets.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of saw-sets and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one of great strength and durability adapted to be adjusted to a saw in less time than an ordinary handsaw-set and capable of setting the teeth faster than the same without liability of breaking the teeth.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character having a toothsetting punch arranged to move longitudinally of a tooth from the point of the same toward the body of the saw-blade and capable of bending the tooth laterally during such movement, whereby all liability of breaking a tooth is eliminated.
WVth these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handsaw-set constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a saw-blade. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the saw-set, the saw being in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the body of the saw-set. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the gage-supporting plate and the gages. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of mounting the gages.

1 designates the body of the saw-set, which is provided with a projecting handle 2, ex-
plate or piece provided at the top with a projecting approximately L-shaped arm 3, extending upwardly and forwardly and terminating in a guide-opening 4. The guideopening 4 receives a rounded portion or shank 5 of a vertically-movable tooth-engaging punch 6, which has a tapered lower portion 7, presenting an inclined face or edge 8 to the tooth to be set and adapted to exert a wedging action for bending the same against an anvil or die 9. The lower portion of the punch has flat side faces, and it is provided at its outer or front edge with a bearing-recess 10 for the reception of a rounded transverse connecting portion 11 of an oscillatory yoke 12, which forms a link connection between the vertically-movable tooth-engaging punch and the body of the saw-set.
The yoke is composed of two sides or links and the transverse connecting portion 11, and the sides which embrace the body of the saw-set have inner enlarged ends, which are pierced by a transverse pivot or pin 12 The pivot or pin 12 also passes through an opening of the body of the saw-set and is provided at one end with a head and is secured at the other end by a split key 13 or other suitable fastening device. The pin 12 pivots the yoke to the body, and the yoke oscillates upwardly and downwardly when the punch is operated. The punch is normally held in a raisedposition by means of a coiled spring 14, located within an opening 15 of the body of the saw-set and disposed on a supportingpin 16,- which extends inwardly from the front edge of the body to a point in rear of the opening 15, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The terminals 17 of the coiled spring extend laterally from the same at the top thereof and engage the lower edges of the sides of the yoke, which is provided with recesse's 18 for the reception of the extended terminals of the coiled spring. When the punch is operated as hereinafter explained,-
the yoke is forced downwardly, which results in a compression of the coiled spring, and the latter is adapted to raise the punch automatically, when the same is free to move upward.
The shoulder formed by reducing the upper portion of the tooth-setting punch to form ICC the shank 5 limits the upward movement of the punch and the yoke. The yoke detachably secures the punch to the body of the saw-set, and when the yoke is detached the punch may be removed.
The anvil or die 9 consists of a block or piece having a horizontal upper edge and a vertical inner edge and arranged within a recess 19 of the front edge of the body 1. The upper portion of the front or outer edge of the die or anvil inclines upwardly and inwardly and is located contiguous to, but is normally spaced from, the inclined tooth-engaging edge of the vertically-movable punch. The lower edge 20 of the die or anvil is engaged by an inclined edge 21 of the gage-supporting plate or member 22, which is secured within the lower portion of the recess 19 by a screw 23. The plate or member 22, which detachably secures the die or anvil in the upper portion of the recess 19, is provided with a pair of inwardly or rearwardly extending spaced flanges 24, which embrace the side faces of the body portion 1, whereby the gage-supporting plate or member is rigidly secured to the body and is held against pivotal movement on the screw 28.
The gage plate or member, which'is secured to the front of the body, extends laterally on opposite sides of the body and the handle, which is arranged in line with the punch and die. The said plate or member 22 forms a pair of gage-supporting arms 45, on which are mounted adjustable gages 26. The arms 25 are provided with horizontal slots 27, and the gages, which are substantially inverted-U -shaped, are secured in their adjustment by means of screws 28, extending through the slots 27 and through the inner end portions of the gages and provided with thumb-nuts 29, located at the outer faces of the inner ends of the gages and adapted to clamp the same. In practice the gages are adjusted so 'as to rest upon the drag or clearing teeth of a saw, which is held in a vise or clamp with its cutting edge at the top. The saw-set, which is held inthe left hand, is placed upon the cutting edge of the saw in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and as the punch or tooth-setting means is in a vertical position and moves longitudinally of a saw-tooth from the point to the base the tooth is adapted to be set by a blow of a hammer upon the upper end of the punch. By this arrangement the device may be quickly moved from one tooth to another of a saw-blade, and the teeth of a saw maybe quickly set with great accuracy, and as the tooth-setting punch in its movement longitudinally of a tooth exerts a wedging action on the same all liability of breaking the teeth of a saw is eliminated.
The body 1 of the saw-set is provided with a depending arm 30, having a threaded opening 31 for the reception of an adjustingscrew 32, which is arranged to engage the adjacent side face of the saw-blade 33, and by adjusting the screw the amount-of set or inclination given a tooth may be controlled. A or looking nut 34 is arranged on the screw for engaging the depending arm to prevent the screw from accidentally rotating after the same has been adjusted.
The saw-set is adapted for setting the teeth of various kinds of saws, both straight and circular, and as it is only necessary to bring the tooth centrally of the engaging face of the die or anvil 9 it will be seen that it is easily placed in proper position on a saw-blade and may be quickly transferred from one tooth to another.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw-set, the combination of a body having a handle, a vertically-movable toothsetting punch guided on the body, an oscillatory yoke pivotally connected with the body and embracing the tooth-setting punch and moving with the same, and means for auto-. matically moving the punch and the yoke upwardly.
2. In a saw-set, the combination of a body having an opening, a vertically movable tooth-setting punch guided on the body, a yoke pivotally connected with the body and embracing and interlocked with the toothsetting punch, the sides of the yoke being located adjacent to the said opening, and a coiled spring mounted within the opening and having its terminals extended in opposite directions and engaging the sides of the yoke, said spring being adapted to swing the yoke upward to raise the tooth-setting punch.
- 3. In a saw-set, the combination of a body, a vertically-movable tooth-setting punch, an oscillatory yoke pivotally connected with the body and embracing the tooth-setting punch and moving with the same, and a spring for automatically moving the punch and the yoke upwardly.
4. In a saw-set, the combination of a body having a recess, a gage-supporting plate detachably secured to the body and projecting at the said recess, and a die fitted in the recess and extending back of the gage-supporting plate and retained in the recess by the said plate, said die being removable from the recess after the gage-plate is detached from the body.
5. In a saw-set, the combination of a body having a recess, a punch, a gage-supporting plate detachably secured to the body and provided with spaced flanges embracing the same, said plate being also provided with an angularly-disposed edge located at the said recess, a die fitted in the recess and having an angularly-disposed edge engaging the said plate, and gages supported by the plate.
