JOSEPH P. LEE, OF WYALUSING, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOOF-SHEARS.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 401,892, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed April 30, 1888. Serial No. 272,280. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. LEE, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Wyalusing, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoof-Shears, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in hoof shears or cut-.
ters, having for its object the provision of a simple and highly efficient device for cutting or trimming a horses hoof prior to placing a shoe thereon, whereby-the shoeing operation is greatly expedited and is effected in a substantial manner.
The invention consists, briefly, in two jaws or arms carrying one a sharp knife or cutter and the other a block for said knife or cutter to strike against, said jaws or arms being operated through the agency of an eccentric 0r cam adjustably connected to said knife-carrying jaw or arm, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the knife-carrying jaw or arm, which is preferably made in the form shown, and has secured to its outer forward end by means of screws a a a knife or cutter, a, as shown, said knife or cutter being removably secured, so as to permit of its being sharpened or renewed when necessary.
B is a jaw or arm pivotally secured at its inner end between cheeks b b of the jaw or arm A, and said jaw or arm has secured to its outer end a preferably copper plate, I), the same being designed to slightly project above the end of said arm, andis'held in position by means of a plate, 6 and screws 17 b passed therethrough, as shown. In this jaw or arm B is formed a semicircular portion, 0,
D is an arm having formed with its outer forward end an eccentric or cam-like portion, 01, designed to fit and move within the grooved circular portion 0 of the jaw or arm B, the same being held therein by means of a crosspin, d secured at its ends in the cheeks d d, and projecting through the curved opening or recess d of said eccentric or cam. To a nose or projection, e, of the eccentric or cam d are secured by means of a cross-pin, e, the ends of two pitmen, e 6 passed on either side of the eccentric or cam and the arm B. The inner ends of these pitmen e e are pivotally secured to the end of a bolt, F, which is passed through an aperture in jaw or arm A, and is provided with inner and outer nuts, f f, bearing, respectively, against the inner and outer surface of the arm A, whereby said bolt is adjustably held at the desired point, according to the extent it is desired to operate the knife-carrying jaw or arm.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by operating the eccentric-arm D the outer ends of the jaws or arms A B will be caused to separate or open, and that the extent thereof is readily and easily adjusted by the nutted bolt F.
In practice the jaws or arms are opened,
and the copper plate secured in the end of the jaw or arm B is held or placed against the outside of the horses hoof, while the knife or cutter is placed on the inside thereof, and the operator, commencing the operation, moves the eccentric-arm inward, causingthe knife or cutter to pass through the hoof, the extent of the depth of the cutting being regulated as necessary. This is continued until the entire hoof is pared or trimmed, when the same is ready for the reception of the shoe.
It will be seen that my invention is extremely simple, cheap, and durable, and that the same embodies advantages in points of simplicity, durability, general efficiency, and inexpensiveness.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described hoof-shears, consisting of the jaw or arm A, carrying a knife at one end, the jaw or arm B, pivotally secured at its inner end to said jaw or arm A at about the center thereof, and havinga curved groove or recess and a block at its outer end, the In testimony whereofI affix my signature in slotted cam or gccentric workin g i111 said groove presence of two witnesses. or recess and aving a rearward y-extending handle, the pitmen connected to said cam 01' JOSEPH 5 eccentric, and the adjusting-bolt secured to Witnesses:
the jaw-handle A, and to which said pitmen C. S. RUSSELL, are connected, substantially as set forth. F. E. JAYNE.
