by declare the following to be a description of the same, and of the manner of constructing 4 and using the invention, insuch full, clear,
concise, and exact terms as to enable any penson skilled in the art to which itappertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of the specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved tool for the convenientand accurate paring or trimming of the hoofs of horses in the process of shoeing. The main featuresare the peculiar construction and relative adjustment to each other of the opposite jaws of said tool, adinissibly called nippers, and the trimming or cutting means with which said jaws are provided,as are more fullyand'plainly shown in the description that follows.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front end view of the tool. Fig. ,2 is a side elevation of tool,witl1 certain parts in section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of jaw D and its shear-blade detached therefrom. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of end of jaw B, and having its knife detached therefrom. Arepresents one of the arms of the tool, terminating in the jaw B. C is the other arm of the tool, terminating in the jaw l). E is the pivot by which said arms are connected together. Said jaws bend toward each other in very nearly the same horizontal plane.
Jaw B is provided with the knife F, which projects suitably forward of the inner end of said jaw. Said jaw has on itsouter terminal surface the recess a, within which shank b of knife slides. Set-screw 0, passing through 1ongitudinal slot 0 of shank Z), holds said knife at any adjusted position in said recess. At a centrally rear point of recess a is formed the longitudinal lug d, through which works screwe, adapted to have bearing against the shank of knife F, whose object is to push said knife forward in said recess, as may be necessary for the taking up of wear on the cutting-edge of said knife.
The terminal bent portion f of jaw D lies in a' horizontal plane somewhat outwardly beyond the horizontal plane of knife F, and of the corresponding plane ofjaw B, in which the shank of said knife is inserted, so that said knife may work substantially under the inner horizontal surface of said jaw D. Said terminal bent portionf o'fjaw D may be outwardly somewhat convex, the better to fit the natural curvature of the hoof of the horse, and the extreme end 9 of said jaw D is concave, and also beveled inwardly, forming shear-block h. Directly under said block is located shear-blade i, having its front edge concave,corr.esponding substantially with the concavity of block h. Said blade t is removable, and also adjustable toward and from said block it by means of screws 9', having collars 111, one screw on each side of jaw D, or by any other equivalent means. Said screws 7 are so connected with blade 2' that by screwing them one way said blade is started somewhat away from block h, and by screwing them in the opposite direction said blade is drawn closerto said block.
Immediately in rear of shear blade 2' is formed, on the under face of terminal portion f of jaw D, the dovetail crossslot k, into which is fitted the anvil-block G, which forms the terminus of the cutting stroke of knife F. Said anvil-block has its inner lateral edges beveled tofit in said slot is, and when worn is easily removable from said slot for the purpose of its being turned or replaced or otherwise.
Knife F is substantially straight across its cutting-edge, while the reciprocating face of block 71. and .front edge of blade 2' are concave, which several forms of said parts in co-operation cause the outer corners of knife F to strike the hoof first, and thence to out onward to the center of knife; also, by means of the co-operation of knife F and shear-blade z in slightlydifferent plants horizontal to each other there is virtually effected a double out.
\V hat, therefore, I claim is 1. In a hoof-cutting tool, the combination, with jaw B, provided with knife F, having a straight cutting-edge, ol'jaw I), provided with shear-blade '1 having a concave euttingedge, substantially as set forth.
