DEHORNING IMPLEMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,246, dated August 9, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALVA O. BROSIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oochranville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dehorning Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in devices for removing the horns from animals; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in

which Figure 1 represents a front View of my improved dehorning implement. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view of the same having the stationary and movable knives, as well as the handles, removed, showing simply the frame of the device; and Fig. 3 represents a detail view of one of the handles.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the dehorning implement, which consists of a pair of knives, a solid frame for these knives, a follower, and operating-handles. The frame consists of a single piece and rectangular in form, the faceplate of which extends upwardly on either side, as at a a, terminating at the points I) 12, leaving a shoulder c on each side of the opening 12. The lower portion of this frame is slotted, as at e, and the rear part f extends somewhat above the face portion and is provided with a shoulder g, between which and the shoulders on the face is placed the stationary knife h, the same being held securely to the frame by screws 1'. This knife h is V- shaped on its cutting-edge, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and corresponds to the V- shaped knife j, which is below the same and directly, or nearly so, in line with it. This knifej is secured to the head of a follower by screws Z Z, and the lateral edges thereof slide in a groove m on the inner or edge face of each side of the frame. The follower consists of the head, to which the movable knife j is attached, and a double-toothed stem 01,

which is engaged by a pair of toothed segments or gears 0 0, which form part of the two handles 19 p and are pivoted within the slot of the frame, as at q q. These handles are provided with stops 1 1" and a screw 8 within the ferrule 25, whereby the wooden portions u of the handles or levers are secured in place and at the same time permits said wooden portions to be readily removed for shipping, &c.

It will thus be seen that in dehorning stock the handles are opened, thus separating the knives, leaving an opening 2) between them when the horn is passed through the same. The handles are then brought together, forcing the follower, withits knife, toward the stationary knife, and the horn is quickly and easily cut from the head of the animal, and by the construction shown and described a powerful pressure is brought to bear upon the movable knife,and,theknives'beingV-shaped, a draw out is obtained as the two blades approach one another, and itis simple in operation, durable, and cheap to manufacture.

What I claim is Theherein-described dehorning implement, comprising the frame having the slot e and shoulders c g, the stationary knife 71., provided with the V-shaped cutting-edge and secured to the frame between the said shoulders, the movable knife having a corresponding V- shaped cutting-edge and adapted to slide the grooves m m, the follower k, having the toothed stem n, and the handles 10 p, pivoted to the solid frame at q q and provided with the toothed segments 0 0, substantially as specified.
