W. A. CAMPBELL.
DEHORNINGIMPLEMENT. No. 468,236. Patentedfeb. 2, 1-892.
WLzzm/@ 551i.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. CAMPBELL, OF MAROELINE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO W. S. HAYDEN AND EDWARD II. TAYLOR, OF SAME PLACE.
DEHORNING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,236, dated. February 2, 1892.
Application filed September 19, 1891. Serial No. 406,217. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcelino, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinDehorning-Instruments;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in implements for dehorning cattle; and it has for its general object to provide such an implement embodying a construction wherea great leverage and strong cutting power may be attained.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects the invention consists in the peculiar construction, certain novel combina- 2o tions, and the adaptation ofparts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved implement with one of the covering or bearing plates partly broken away, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sect-ion taken in the plane indicated by the line a: :r on Fig. 1 with both of the plates in position.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the main bar of my improved i1nplement, which is preferably of a rectangular form in cross-section for a portion of its length for the attachment of the covering and hearing plates B, which are connected to said bar by rivets, as a, or in any other manner suitable to the purposes of my invention. These parallel plates B, which are preferably of the approximate form illustrated and are designed to afford bearings for the operative no parts of my implement, are provided at a point adjacent to theirfree ends with aligned apertures b of a shape and size to receive the horn to be cut.
Eccentrically mounted upon a pivot-post, 5 as c, which bears in the plates B at a point slightly oif the longitudinal center of the same and adjacent to the apertures 12, is my improved cam-shaped cutting-knife O, which is provided with a cutting-edge cl, so situated with respect to the pivot-post and of such a curvature that in operation it will gradually enter the orbit of the annular apertures and gradually sink into and cut through the horn. This knife 0, as better illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, has its edge opposite to the cutting-edge d, formed into a toothed segment, as e, for the engagement of the toothed segmental head D of the operatingdeverE, which is fulcrumed upon a post at d and plays between the plates B, as illustrated. By this construction it will be readily perceived that by moving the power end of the lever E in toward the bar A the toothed head of the said lever engaging with the toothed edge of the cam-shaped knife will cause the same to swing in the direction of the arrow and enter the orbit of the annular apertures b and the horn seated therein; and by the peculiar manner of transmitting motion from the operating-lever to the knife it will be further and readily perceived that great power and leverage is obtained and the operator enabled to force the knife through a very hard substance.
Suitably fastened between the plates B at the free ends thereof and partly surrounding the apertures b isa curvilinear leather strip or filling f, into which the edge of the cuttingknife sinks in'operation, whereby a complete and smooth out may be accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The deho'rning implement described, consistin g, essentially, of the main bar A, the parallel covering or bearing plates connected to said bar, the aligned apertures 12, formed in said plates and adapted to receive and hold a horn, the leather filling between said plates and partly surrounding the apertures therein, the cam-shaped cutting-knife eccentrically 0 mounted between the plates adjacent to the aligned apertures therein and having a curvilinear cutting-edge and a segmental toothed edge, and the operating-lever fulcrumed between the bearing-plates and having a seg- 5 mental toothed head engaging the toothed edge of the cutting-knife, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lVILLIAM A. CAMPBELL.
