Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEICEn JONES GUIHBIE, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVED SHEARS FOR CUTTING BOLTS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,705, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JONES GUTHRIE, ofthe citlvr of Wilmington, county of New Oastle,'
and State of Delaware, have invented an Improved Tool for Cutting Bolts, Nails, or Iron Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact .description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure ltrepresents a perspective view of the tool; Fig. 2, a sectional view; and Fig. 3 the movable knife and its connecting-plate.
A represents the long handles or parallel levers working on a pivot or joint, B, the pivot heilig set to one side of the circular plaie C, so as to operate as an eccentric. Between the plates O is a long but curved connecting-plate, D, working loosely on two pins, E E, at each end ofthe plate I), one pin E being attached to the circular plate O, and projecting from it, and the other pin E projecting from the lower side of the cutting-knife G, this knife working in a slot of the end of the tool as a guide. At the end of the tool is a short knife, J, movable by a setscrew, so that the blade or beveled edge of the knife can be taken out at an)7 time to be sharpened.
In operating the tool the handles are opened and the screw or rod to be cut is placed bebetween the cutting-edges of the knives at K. The closing of the handles brings the knives against the rod, and it is ont with ease 'from both sides. This tool is used to cut off the ends of screws close to the nuts of the runninggear of carriages. The set-screw L stops the handles or levers from closing any nearer together than necessary, so that the edge of the movable knife G does not close against the edge ofthe opposite knife J.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the parallel levers A A, the joint B, with the connecting-plate E and movable knife G, operating against an opposite knife, J, and the set-screw L, all constructed and arranged as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
JONES GUTHRIE.
