To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN O. KENEDY, of L0- gansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Gutters for Cutting Straw, Stalks, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my improvement or invention consists, first, in so constructing the sash or sliding frame of the straw-cutter that it will slide in an inclined position, having attached to it one or more knives horizontally, the object being to insure a drawing or a traverse cut; second, in providing one or more knives,which are placed in an inclined position, secured at the upper end by a bolt or rivet, and so arranged and constructed that the motion of the lever causes the inclined knife to work in a hinged manner, bringing the edge of the horizontal and inclined knives together, similar to the operation of scissors.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct my frame K K and box Gin any of the known forms; but in order to insure an easier and cleaner cut I so construct my sash or sliding frameina diamond or angular shape, as shown at D D D in the accompanying drawing, having the knives b 13 attached to it horizontally, one on each side of the sliding sash or frame D D D 5 or if it is desirable to use but one knife on sliding sash or frame D D D, I then use the knife I), attached to the inside of the sliding sash or frame D D D, leaving off the knife B, which is attached to the outside of the sliding sash or frame D D D. The intention being to use in connection with the sliding sash or frame D D D one or more knives, as is desirable, I attach the sliding sash or frame D D D to the frame K K, by means of rabbeted cleats J J, in such manner as to cause the sliding sash or frame D D D to slide in an inclined position. To one of the cleats J, I attach one or more knives, a A, to correspond with the number of the horizontal knives b B, which are attached to the sliding sash or frame by means of a bolt or rivet. To the lower end of the inclined knives a A, I attach a rod, F, which is attached to the lever E, the lever being attached to the sliding sash or frame D D D by a bolt or screw, so that when the lever E is raised, as shown in the drawing, the sl ding sash or frame I) D D being up and themclined knives a A being depressed or thrown back, it leaves the aperture, through which the uncut straw or stalks are to be fed to the knives, clear. Vhen the lever is depressed, as shown in the dotted lines, it elevates the lower end of the inclined knives a A, as is also shown in the dotted lines, thus causing the edges of the knives or A and b B to cut together, similar to scissors, while the horizontal knives b B, which are attached to the diamond or angular shaped sliding sash or frame D D D, which slides in an incline, traverse or draw about half the length of the knife I) B, thus insuring a much easier and cleaner out.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The described arrangement of the diamond or angular shaped sliding sash or frame D D D, horizontal knives'b B,when constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The inclined knivesaA,when constructed and operated by the rod F, and lever E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
