IMPROVEMENT IN WICK-TRIMMERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,209, dated/January 7, 1879; application iile November 9, 1878. i

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL L. ANDREWS, of Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Wick Trimmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,

vreference being had to the annexed drawings,

making a part of this specication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation oi' a perspective of my lamp-wick trimmer, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation view of the same.

My invention relates to a device for holding a lamp-wick and trimming the same while thus held; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

To properly trim a lamp-wick and sever the burnt and charred portions thereof, the cut end should be left with an oval form-11e., the trimmed end should be highest in the center, and graduallyT slope toward the corners. In order to properlydo this, it is necessary that the wick should be held firmly by some proper device which will prevent the wick from slipping, as is the case when the wick is trimmed with shears, and the cutting action ofthe shears exerts that twisting result.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a pair of lever-clamps, pivoted together at one end, and they are adapted to receive and clamp the wick tightly between the jaws upon an oval surface. To an arm is pivoted an elbow, to which elbow is pivoted a two-edged knife. A tube is secured to the instrument, and it is adapted to embrace the wick-tube of the lamp.

The construction may be changed in various ways without departing from the principle of my invention, which is to hold the wick between oval jaws rmly while trimming the same.

The cutting implement may be of any suitable form or kind, and the wick-tube may be dispensed with.

Beferring to the drawings, A represents one of the jaws, carrying a tube, a; and B, the other jaw, both pivoted together at a', and each provided with an oval surface, A B, as shown.

C represen ts the arm,to which, at c, is loosely pivoted an elbow, D, to which, in turn, is loosely pivoted, at d, a knife, x.

The levers or clamps A B may be provided with suitable handles, as shown.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The jaws AB, pivoted together at a', having convex upper surfaces, A B', as shown, in combination with a cutting device, as specified.

2. The jaws A B, as shown, in combination with the wick-guide a and acutting device, as

set forth.

3. The jaws A B, pivoted at a', and provided with the wick-guide a and convex portions A B', as shown, in combination with the arm C, elbow D, and knife x, as and for the purpose specified. l
