Description

J. HILGER.
HOOF-PARER.
No. 190,682. Patented May15,1877.
Witnaaaea: Inventow: %%m
M PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. I! Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HILGER, OF BELLEVUE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOF-PARERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,682, dated May 15, 1877; application filed Y January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HILG-ER, of Bellevue, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Cleaning and Paring the Boots of Horses, and of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side elevation of my complete invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 detail views.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to combine in one instrument all that is necessary for paring and trimming the hoofs of horses, and in such a manner that the cutting-tools forming part of the same can be readily detached for the purpose of sharpening; and, further, to so construct the instrument as to avoid the possibility of the cutting-edge coming in contact with the lower jaw of the same, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cutting-tool, secured to the upper jaw of the nippers by means of the slot S and thumbscrew B, the lower jaw of the nippers being provided with a slot or opening, through which the edge of the tool A enters and passes to a certain point, regulated by a suitable-sized pin, F, secured between the handles of the nippers near the center. Beneath the lower jaw of the nippers is attached a grooved socket, D, through which passes the shank of the butteris-blade O, which is held or secured in place by the pin E in the dovetailed socket E To the rear upper handle of the nippers is secured a brace-head, E which is screwed into a projecting lug on the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, the object of which is such as to allow the brace-head to rest against the person of the operator, to assist in holding the lower jaw of the nippers firmly against the front part of the hoof, so that the tool A can properly pare off or trim the same.
I am aware of the patent granted to O. Rogers, August 8, 1876, and numbered 180,731, and hereby disclaim the construction shown therein; but
What I do claim as new and useful is- The tool A, having slot S and set-screw B, butteris-blade 0, held in lug D by the pin E, brace-head E and pin F, in combination with the nipper-tongs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN HILGER.
