SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,209, dated October 9, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it knownthat l', Pnnrns LINCOLN, a citizen ot' the :United States, residing at Coldwater, inthe county ofBranch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife or Tool Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knife or tool handles,whereby the knife-blade or button-hook, screw-driver blade, corkscrew, or other similar tools may be held securely inside the handle, extended outward for use, or removed and replaced at will.
The object of my invention is to construct a cheap and durable handle that will admit of the knife-blade or other tool being entirely secured within the handle, forced outward, and held in place for use at will, or be removed and another tool placed in position without weakening ,or deranging the handle. I attain these objects by means of the following construction, which will be more fully pointed out in the specification and claims.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my device, showing a knife-blade extending from the handle, and by dotted lines the extended clamping-arm. Fig. 2is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the knifeblade secured inside the handle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a button-hook extending from the rear end of the handle. Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing screwdriver blade extending; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal view, showing knife-blade and screw-driver held in place.

The opposite side of this space is covered by a pivoted arm, B, when the tool is inside the handle or when the tool is extended for use. ArmB is formed with its outer edge flat and nearly straight from its outer end to near its inner end, and
\ of sufficient width to rest on the edges of the metal plates forming the inside of the handle. The outer end of arm B is recessed back to a square shoulder, I). The rear portion of arm B is curved downward, with tapering sides to lit loosely between the sides of the handle.
The tools adapted to be used with handle A. are formed with a projecting stud, j", on one edge of their rear portion, that is formed to engage with recess b at the outer end of arm B,

and where one tool is retained inside the handle and another thrust outward from the end for use, the innerA curved end ofthe lever-arm B engages with a sqnareshouldered recess, g, in the inner end or said tool. This curved recess is cut into the inner end of the toolV and outward to near its outer edge, leaving a square shouldered inward projection, g, formed to receive and hold the shouldered projeetion /L on the inner end of the lever-arm B.
Having thus described my invention, what 'l desire to secure by Letters Patent is* 1. A knil'e or tool handle having an open end, through which tools are extended, and an open side adapted to be closed by a lever pivoted at its inner end between the walls and near the inner end of said openings, the outer end of said lever abutting against a projection on the inner edge of the tool, and therebyholding the same in place, substantially as shown and specified.
2. A knife or tool'handle having open ends and an open side, through .which tools are inserted and removed, and a longitudinal]y-tilting lever-arm, at the inner end ol' which is IOO e Y essere!) formed a recess to receive a corresponding proot-pin, substantially as shown.
4. A tool-handle formed as described7 havin g a tool secured between the sides of the saine 1 5 by means of a pivoted lever, and a second tool extended from the inner end of said handle and held in place by the inner end of the same lever-arin, substantially as set forth.
