Be it known that we, FRED G. DIETERIGH and EDGAR CHARLEs WALFORD, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vCigar- Dealers7 Knives, and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specincation.

This invention relates to an improved knife or combined tool intendednd adapted especially for the use of cigar-dealers, and cornprising in one a number of such small tools as are frequently required in this business for prying open and closing cigarboxes, canceling the revenue-stamps, and the like; and it consists in the improved construction of the said implement, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A in the drawings designates the handle, which is to be cast or otherwise formed of iron or other material. vided at its upper end with a slot or recess, B, to receive a knife-blade. The lower end of the handle is tapered so as to form a ilat blade, C, the vend of which may be rounded, as at D, and which is useful for prying open cigar-boxes. The blade C has on one side a notch, E, for drawing and straightening tacks, and at. the other side a notch, F, atthe edge of which is secured a small curved steel blade, G, for cutting the tips of cigars.

H is a stout steel blade for general use, which is pivoted, in the usual manner, upon a pin,I, at the upper or front end of the slot or recess B, into which'lit may be folded. The back of this blade is ground off angularly at the point, forming a short stout cutting-edge,

This handle is pro- J, which is convenient for scraping and canceling the cigar-stamps, which may thus be done without dulling and injuring the cuttingedge proper, K, ofthe knife-blade. When the latter is folded, as will be seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the edge J comes within the recess 13 so that it will not be liable to cut and injure the pocket in which the implement may be carried.

Upon a transverse pin, L, in the slot or recess B at the back of the knife-handle, is pivoted a lock-catch, M, having a tooth, N, engaging a notch, O, in the inner end of the knife-blade, so as to hold the latter securely when opened. The lower inner end of the lock-catch is acted upon byV a spring, P,

mounted upon a transverse pin, Q, the inner end of said spring resting against a shoulder, It, at the lower end of the recess B. By the action of this spring the look-catch is thrown into engagement with the kniieblade, so as to operate in the manner and for the purpose stated. The outer side of the lock-catch, which, it should be stated, is to be cast or otherwise formed of steel, is formed with a from being injured and defaced by the driving of tacks. Injury to the lock-catch itself is also prevented by the plate or disk S being supported upon the shoulders T of the handle.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood froml the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It combines in a convenient and portable form a number of small tools which are frequently used by cigar-dealers, and obviates the inconvenience of using a-pocket-knife, which is easily broken and injured by rough usage. It may be easily made in a durable manner, and at a small cost. v YVe claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- IOC l. A knife-handle having a slot or recess to receive a folding blade, and having a tapering lower end forming a flat blade integral with the said handle, and having in one side a taekdrawing notelnand at the other side a notch the edge of which is provided with a curved steel blade, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a folding knife, a lock-catch formed of steel, and having a serrated plate or disk adapted to serve for driving tacks, substantially as set forth.

S. In a folding knife, the combination, with the handle i'ornied with shoulders upon its back near the upper end, ofthe folding blade and a lock-catch formed with a serrated plate or disk adapted to rest upon and be snpported by the said shoulders, substantially as setforth.

In a folding knife, a east-metal handle formed with a slot to receive the folding blade, andhaving shoulders upon the baek near the upper end; in combination with the folding blade, a lock-catch formed with a plate or disk Yadapted to rest upon and be supported by the shoulders ofthe handle, said lock-catch being pivoted upon a transverse pin in the back of the handle, and an operatil'ig-spring mounted upon a transverse pin below the lock-catch, and bearing at its lower end against a shoulder at the lower end of the slot in the handle, substantially as set forth.
