Description

(ModeL) 4 J. L. STARKS.
Scissors.
No. 237,781. Patented Feb. 15.1881.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN. L. STARKS, OF SHARON GROVE, KENTUCKY.
SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,781, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed November 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. STARKS, of Sharon Grove, in the county of Todd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors and Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a pair of scissors or shears embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section. Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing the pivotal connection of the blades.
This invention has relation to scissors and shears; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and B designate the blades of the shears or scissors, the faces of which are ground hollow, which method of grinding causes them to out much longer than when their faces are plain. By this method of grinding, the blades touch only at the rivet 0, their extreme edges, and at their points, and in operation they will cut from the rivet to the points of the blades, and as they only touch at their extreme cutting-edges they will in use continue to keep sharp as they wear away, instead of getting dull, whereby grinding of the blades is obviated. The handle D of one of the blades is fixed thereto. The blade B, however, is provided, immediately below the rivet, with two semicircular lugsor ears, E E, with a recess, F, between them. The handle for the thumb is pivoted in these lugs E E by a shank, G, and a key, H, and spring I are inserted into a transverse opening through said shank G, by which the handle may be locked in either of the notches J or J. at the right and left of the recessF.
By this construction large ears E E and a large shank, G, may be employed, whereas when the shank of the blade is provided with (Model.)
the pivoted or reversible handle this cannot be done, and loss of strength results.
By this construction the thumb-handle may be thrown either to one side or the other of the fixed handle by simply placing the forefinger of the right hand in the ring of the thumbhandle, grasping the blades, when closed, in the left hand, and pressing upon the spring I with the thumb-nail of the right hand. The pivoted handle may be then turned to the side opposite to that which it then occupied.
These shears are simple and inexpensive, are durable, and may be kept sharp for a longer period of time than others in use. I also make the rivet of peculiar construction. The portion a, which passes through the blade A, is round, and is provided with a spiral spring, M, which rests under the head of the rivet. The portion 1), which passes through the blade B, is rectangular, and a screw is driven into a hole therein to connect the blades. This spring M compensates for the wear of the blades and the rivet, and holds the blades always in proper contact from the rivet to their points, and preserves a uniform pressure during their operation.
I am aware that reversible handles are common in shears and scissors, and also hollowground blades; and such I do-not desire to be understood as claiming, broadly, as of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a pair of scissors or shears, the combination of the blade B, provided with the ears E E, intermediate transverse recess, F, and notchesJ J, and the reversible handle having the large shank G, providedwith transverse opening, and the key H and spring 1, constructed and operating substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN LITTLEBERRY STARKS.
