Description

N. PETERS. fHOTQALITHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C `my improved shears or scissors. i A and- B represent the blades of a parrot' shears or @sind dtjjliw. l
CHARLES c. .I`oIII\Iso`I\ I,A or SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.
Lette/rs Patent N 102,944, dated May 10, 1870.
`IiiMZPIR'ITEIVIIElN-'I IN SHEA'RS AND SCISSORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To allfwhom itemayconcern y Be it known that I, CHARLES C. JOHNSON', of
l Springfield, in the county of WVindsor and in the State of Vermont, have `invented certain new andusefnl Improvements in Shear-sand Scissors; anddo hereby de clarethat :the following is a full, clear, an'dexact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanyingdrawiugs and tothe letter-sof reference marked thereon making `a partici' this specification, l The naturel ofmyinvention consists in a novel coustruction of the joint Ainshears and scissors, whereby I the joint yis prevented from `becoming loose by the wear and action ofthe blades.
`In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use 'the same, I will" now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, `in whichl Figure-1 is aside view, and Y y 'Figures 2 and 3 are longitudinal vertical sectionsV of scissors, pivoted together-by'a pivot, a, passing through them, as shown in fig. 3.
This pivot is attached to a` bar, C, whichA is secured to the handle of .the blade A by means of a screw, b,
thc blade B passing between s aidbar O and the blade A. The end 1ct' thel bar O nearest to-the handle' of the blade Amay also be secured by a small screw orA rivet, Nas seenlin fig. i
g In place of thc pivotapassing through the two blades, the. blade A maybe provided with a round projection extending about halll the distance through -the blade B, while -on the bar O is a similar projection, lwhichcompletes the pivot, as seen in Iig. 2.
- By this arrangement, the blades do not come in contact with the screw to loosen or tighten, as is always the case with common shears. l
rlhe joint isnot rigid, but is a very little spring in it-j ust enough to let the blades cut smoothly from heel to joint against each other, which prevents them cutting each others edge, as is often the case with a rigid joint. Then, by the screw, this joint can be at once adjusted to very heavy cutting, as well as to light. It can be readily taken a'part, for grinding, by removing the screw. In the old way,it is usn-allythe case that, when' the screw begins to get loose, it gets headed at once, and then the bla-des cannot apart.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I yclaim Aas new, and desire tov secure by Letters Patent, is#- re`adily be taken `In combination, with the shear-blades lA B, the cInploymentv of the spring C, connected to one of the handles, and secured, by a screw, b, to one of the In testimony that I claim 'the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1870. CHARLES, C. JOHNSON.
Witnesses: I
