Letters Patent No. 102,752, dated May 10, 1870.

IMPIROVIEHVIENT IN PRUNING AND HEDG-E-SHEARS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To whom it may conce-rn Be it known that I, ELIsHA K. BIGELoW, of Litch- `field, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Pruning and Hedge-Shears; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description there of`, reference vbeing had to the accompanying drawings spring in connection with pulleys, the handles and the cutting-blade, for the purpose of operating the shears also, in the arrangement of its 'several parts.

In the accompanying drawings- A0I-represents a handle, preferably of wood, to which is secured the standard B, the upper part ot' which ,should be of steel, and curved to form a resisting blade,

G,-to the action ot' the cutting-blade D, which should be made substantially ofthe form shown in the drawings and pivcted to the standard at b.

A curvedslot, a, describing a segment of a circle, whose axis is at b, is cut through the cutting-blade, and a set-screw, d, passes through this slot into the standard B. 1t will be'noticed that the cutting-blade is curved into the form of a hook upon its lower edge,

for the purpose of hooking on to and assisting to bring.I

within reach of the operator any desired limb.

- A small pulley or friction-wheel, E is pivoted to the standard B, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned.

To the handle A is also pivoted a wheel or pulley, F, to which is secured a. handle, G.

A stud-spring, H, is secured to the end of the cutting-blade, as shown at 71., and thence passing over the small pulley E and partially around the pulley or wheel It, is secured to its periphery at k, the whole arrangement forming a very powerful implement for the purpose. v

It will be readily seenthat by this device it makes no difference whether the limb to be out otf is high or low, as the apparatus for actuating the cutting-blade prevents the necessity of a great extension of the arms required, where shears of the ordinary construct-ion, and provided with long handles, are used to actuate the cutting-blade ata distance from 'the operator.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The spring H, iu connection with the pulleys E. and F, the handles A G. and the cutting-blade d, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purpose set forth.

` 2. The lpruning-s hears described, consisting of the handles A G, the standard B, provided with the curved resisting blade C, the cutting-blade I) pivoted to the standard at b, operated with` the slot a, set-'screw d, and the spring H, all constructed und arranged as described and for the purposes set forth.
