- This invention relates to shears for clipping wool, &c., and is an improvement over the shears on which I obtained Letters Patent No. 613,978, dated November 8, 1898, the object of the present invention being to simplify and improve the construction of the shears shogvn in said patent, and the novel features of the invention will be summarized in the claims following the present detailed description of the improved shears, which will be clearly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which parts sub stantially similar to those shown in my said patent are designated by the same letters of reference used in said patent, While the novel features are referred to by numerals.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUGH V. DUNN, of Pemberton, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia,h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Shears and I hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to shears for clipping wool, &c., and is an improvement over the shears on which I obtained Letters Patent No. 613,978, dated November 8, 1898, the object of the present invention being to simplify and improve the construction of the shears shogvn in said patent, and the novel features of the invention will be summarized in the claims following the present detailed description of the improved shears, which will be clearly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which parts sub stantially similar to those shown in my said patent are designated by the same letters of reference used in said patent, While the novel features are referred to by numerals.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the complete shears open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the shears on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 1.
A A designate the opposite handles of the shears, the rear ends of which are pivotally connected to the ends of a bent band-spring D, which tends to force the handles apart. A comb-blade B is fixed on the front end of handle A and has a series of parallel teeth I), each of which is preferably beveled from its cutting edge backward toward the next tooth, as indicated in Fig. at. On the front end of handle A is a cutting blade 0, the cutting edge of which is diagonal to the cutting edges of the teeth, and this blade may be concaved, as described in my said patent, but not necessarily so, and in the present instance instead of being concaved it is set at a slight inclination to the plane of the teeth 19, as shown in Fig. 4. From this construction it results that as the'blade 0 moves over the teeth I),
vor vice versa, the point of blade 0 will drop below the point of the tooth with which it is going to coact, although the heel of the blade 0 will rest upon the heel of the then as the blade 0 moves over the teeth I) the cutting edge of the blade will ride up on the cutting edge of the teeth, as described in my said patent, and thus an effectual shearing cut will be realized.
The handles A A are connected by X-levers E e; but instead of being arranged as in my said patent these X -levers in my improved construction have no spring function of holdblade B, and
ing the blades B 0 together, and the front ends of the levers are mounted on fixed pivots, while the rear ends of v the levers have a slotted connection with the handle, which is the reverse of that shown in my said patent. The levers E e, as shown, are pivotally connected together at center by means of, a bolt 1, which has a cylindrical portion passing through a suitable opening in the center of lever e and a threaded portion engaging a correspondingly-threaded opening in the center of lever E, so that the bolt is not affected by the oscillation of the levers upon each other. A jam-nut'l is placed on the outer end of the bolt 1 to prevent its loosening. The front ends of the levers E e are entered in horizontal slots 2 in the handles A A near the cutting-blades, and the levers are pivoted in said slots by pins 2, as shown, so that the front ends of the levers have no longitudinal play on the handles, as they did in my said patent. The rear ends of the levers are provided with curved slots e which engage slots 3 in the rear ends of the handles and are retained and guided in said slots by pins 3, which pins may also serve as the means for connecting the spring D to the handles. The slots 2 and 3 prevent oscillation of the handles on. the X- levers and keep the handles in approximately perfect parallel alinement at all times during the operation of the shears and prevent ex cessive binding of the blades upon each other. This improved'construction of the X-levers and their connection to the handles are important features of the present invention.
In order to keep the blades 0 in close cutting contact with the blade B, I employ a flat spring 4:, the inner endof which is shown as confined to the X-levers by the head of the pivot-pin 1, as shown. This spring 4 extends forward to and partially over the blade 0, the front end of said spring having a lip 4, which engages a slot 0 in the outer surface of the blade 0, by which means the spring is kept in position, while its force is to press the plate (1 into contact with the teeth Z) of blade B. The spring 4 lies intermediate the handles and entirely out of the way of the hand of the operator and does not interfere with the passage of the comb-blade through wool or hair nor with the effective operation of the device. This spring so located is another important feature of the present invention.
From the foregoing description and the drawings it will be seen that I have simplified and improved my said patented shears in the several particulars above mentioned.
I Iavin g thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. An animal-shears, consisting of a pair of handles, cuttingblades on the front ends thereof, and a spring to force said handles apart, a pair of X-levers secured to and between the handles, the forward ends of the levers being secured by fixed pivots to the front ends of the handles while the rear ends of the lovers have a slotted engagement with pivots on the rear ends of the handles substantially as described.
2. An animal-shears, consisting of a pair of handles, cuttingblades on the front ends thereof, and a spring to force said handles apart, a pair of X-levers secured to and between the handles, the ends of said levers being guided in slots in the handles, and the forward ends of the levers being secured by fixed pivots in slots in the front ends of the handles while the rear ends of the levers have a slotted engagement with pivots in slots in the rear ends of the handles, substantially as described.
3. An animal-shears, consisting of a pair of handles, cutting-blades thereon, a spring for forcing said handles apart, a pair of X-levcrs secured to and between the handles and a spring attached to the X-levers and bearing upon one of the cutting-blades and adapted to hold them in operative contact, substantially as described.

An animal-shears, consisting of a pair of handles, cutting-blades thereon, a spring for forcing said handles apart, a pair of X-levers pivoted to each other and secured to and between the handles in such manner that the handles are therebyguided parallel when the shears are operated, and a flat spring attached 5 5 handles for forcing them apart, X-levers be- 6 5 tween the handles, the forward end of the levers being fixedly pivoted to the handles, the rear ends of the levers being slidably pivoted to the handles, and a spring attached to the levers and bearing upon one cuttingblade to hold it in contact with the other blade, substantially as described.
6. An animal-shears, comprising a pair of handles, cutting-blades attached to the front endsof the handles, a spring attached to the rear ends of the handles for forcing them apart, X-levers between the handles, the forward end of the levers being pivoted in horizontal slots in the inner sides and front ends of the handles, and the rear ends of the lovers being guided in horizontal slots in the rear ends of the handles, and pins transfixing the slots in the rear ends of the X-levers substantially as described.
7. An animal-shears, handles, cutting-blades attached to the handles, a spring attached to the opposite end of the handles for forcing them apart, X-levers between the handles, the forward ends of the levers being pivoted in horizontal slots to the 0 inner sides of the handles, and the rear ends of the levers being slotted and guided in horizontal slots at the rear end of the handles, and pins transfixing the slots in the rear end of the X-levers; with a flat spring attached 95 to the pivots of the levers and bearing upon one cutting-blade to hold it in contact with the other blade, substantially as described.
