(No Model.)
B. ELGROVE.
TOBACCO CUTTER.
No. 350,485. v Patented Oct. 12, 1886.
NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ELMER E. GROVE, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO. I
TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,485, dated October 12, 1886.
Application filed March 10, 1886. Serial No. 194,695. (No model.)
. To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tobacco cutters.
The object of my invention is to provide a device 'for cutting tobacco, the construction and operation of which are simple, the parts being so arranged that the cutter may be readily cleaned or sharpened without removing the knife.
My invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a cutter embodying my invention, some of the frame being broken away in order to more clearly show the working parts, the knife being shown open ready for cutting. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of same, with the knife shown closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame, showing the handle and cut ting mechanism removed.
a represents the frame or base, which is provided at one end with a standard, a, preferably cast thereon at right angles therewith. A short distance back of the standard a are side frame-pieces, b b, cast rigid with the main frame a, or otherwise secured thereto.
Between the side pieces, b b, is pivoted a handle, a. This handle cis formed at its inner end on the arc of a circle having its center at a point at which the handle is pivoted, and is provided with a series of teeth, (1, adapted to engage in a segment, 6, also journaled between the pieces b b, as shown in Fig. 1. This segment e is provided with an extending arm, 6, which arm is pivoted to the cutter f near the upper end at the rear. The handle 0, at its inner end, is also provided with a projecting lug, c, to which is connected a link, 9. This link 9 is pivoted at one end to the lug c, and at the other to the knife f below the point at which the extending arm" 6 is connected. It will be seen now that as the handlec ismoved in a downward direction on its pivoted center 1 the teeth d, engaging with the segment e, turn the arm (2, thus forcing the top of' the knife forward and downward. Thelink 9, connecting the'lower portion of the knife to the lug a knife forward, and at the same time permits the longitudinal motion of the knife produced by the partial revolution of the extended arm 6. Theknife f is thus forced against thestandard a, and is at the same time moved longitudinally, producing a shearing cut.
The tobacco tobe cut is placed between the standard a and the knife. The teeth d and the segment e are so constructed that when the knife has reached the limit of its forward or backward stroke the inner end of the arm comes against the stops d and (1, respectively, on the segment a. Itwill be seen that this cutter is both effective and simple in its operation. The knife being vertical and pivoted at the rear, an opening is left the entire length of the knife, into which the tobacco may be readily inserted. The knife is left entirely free, so that it may be readily cleaned or sharpened.
The tobacco to be cut is inserted between the .knife and the standard on its edge. The frame being entirely open at this point, the point at'which the tobacco is to be cut may be readily determined.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as follows:
1. The combination, with the frame prothereon, said handle being provided at its inner end withteeth adapted to engage the segment pivoted in said frame, a knife pivoted to said segment, and a link extending from said knife to a lug on said handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the main frame and the Guttingknife, of the handle pivoted to said frame, a segmental arm connected at its outer end to the knife and adapted at its inner end to engage with a series of teeth on said handle, and a link connecting said knife and handle, whereby said knife is adapted to be moved longitudinally, and at the same time forced against a portion of the frame, substantially as set forth.
on the handle 0, forces the lower portion of the vided with the standard, of the handle pivoted IOD 3. The combination, with the base to, having In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the upright standard a and side pieces, b I), my hand. thereon, of the handle a, pivoted between said side pieces, and the vertical reciprocating knife 5 connected to said handle by the segmental arm Vitnesses:
e and link g, substantially as and for the pur- CHASE STEWART, pose set forth. I
ELMER E. GROVE.
