UNITED STATEs' PATENT QEEICE.
LOUIS GATHMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BREAD 'AND VEGETABLE SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,641, dated June 14:, 1887.
Application filed March 10, 1887.
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS GATHMANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bread and Vegetable Slicers, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and convenient machine for cutting bread and slicing vegetables that can be folded into ajsmall compass for storing away while not used; and for that purpose it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section on line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a sectional plan on line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a transverse "ertical section on line 4 4 in Fig. 3.
Corresponding letters in the several figures of the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes the main frame, consisting of two side bars, wand b, with the board 0, rigidly secured between by wood screws, or otherwise. One side bar, a, is wider than the other, I), and the board 0 is secured at even distance below the upper edges of both sidebars, a and b. The top of this frame occupies an inclined position. The bars a and 1) project with their forward ends sufficiently beyond board 0 for a frame, D, to be secured pivotally between the same by screws f passed through holes in such bars. This frame D is composed of parallel top strip, d, and of trapezium-shaped face-boarde, secured against the front edge of strip d. The projecting ends of two plates, 9, secured under strip (Z, form stops or shoulders for holding such strip d in line with boardc of frame A, in which position the frame D is locked by a small shifting bolt, h, secured against one end of face-board e and enteringa socket of bar a. After withdrawing the bolt h the frame D can be turned on its pivots f about one-quarter of a revolution, so as to bring the face-board 'e on a line paralleltwith the face of board 0.
Over each end of the joint between strip (2 Serial No. 230,334. (No model.)
and face-board e is secured with its baseflange a tapering standard, I,both these standards being parallel with their opposing edges, in which they have grooves i for guiding the U shaped knife-plate J,having a downwardlypointed V-shaped cutting-edge,j, and having attached to its top ends a wooden handle, it, by which such knife-plate J is vertically reciprocated.
A slotted opening, 112, of sufficient size for the knife end to pass through, is cut through the joint end of strip (2, and wooden shoulderstrips n are secured against the rear face of board e to be on a relatively V-shaped posi tion for limiting the downstroke of the knifeplate J by its cuttingedgesj coming into contact with these strips.
The operator, reciprocating the knife with his right hand, shiftswith his left hand the bread or vegetables placed upon board 0 so as to cut off a slice with each stroke of the knife.
What I claim is- 1. In a bread and vegetable slicer, the com bination of the vertically-reciprocating knife, the grooved standards in which said knife is held, and a frame in which said standards are held, said frame being pivoted to turn or swing, as described, with a frame having the laterally-inclined board 0, and the side supports, a and b, the former being higher than the latter, to hold the board a in the said inclined position, said frame having the standard-frame pivoted to it, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a bread and vegetable slicer, the combination of the laterally-inclined board 0, and the supports a and b, as described, for holding it in said inclined position, the frame D, pivoted to the parts a and b, the standards I, set on said frame and swinging therewith and standing at a right angle to the inclined surface 0, and the V-shaped cutting-knife held and movable in the standards I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS GATHMANN.
