VILLIAM J. SHELTON, OF COLUMBIA, TEXAS.
HUNTING-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION folmhg part Of Letiils Patent NO. 632,590, dated. September 5, 1899.
Application filed May 2, 1899. Serial No. 715,307. (No model.)
To LIZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SHELTON, of Columbia, in the county of Brazoria and State of rleXas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hunting-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hunting -knives, and has for its object such a knife which will be easy to handle and with which a wire-cutter is connected, so as to render the knife useful in cutting through wire fences or the like.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of the parts, which I shall first describe and then point out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a side View of my improved hunting-knife, the parts being in position to cut wire. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the wire-cuttin g lever closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 with the wire-cutting lever removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line t et of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating the cutting-disk attached to the lever-head.
The improved knife A consists of a blade B, which is slightly reduced in Width near its rear end and at such reduced portion has cheek-pieces C and C riveted or otherwise suitably secured thereto to form the handle of the knife. The cheek-piece C is cut away along its upper edge, and a leverD normally occupies the space on the handle thus provided. At its forward end the said lever is formed with an approximately circular head E, held to turn about a pivot-stud F, which latter is inserted through the said head and through the knife-blade B near the back edge thereof and preferably just in front of the handle. Wire-cutting disks G are countersunk in the abutting sides of the knife-blade and lever-head, and each disk is formed with a central aperture to receive the pivot-stud F, two or more radial recesses G, forming cutting edges which are adapted to register with corresponding recesses in the lever-head and knife-blade, and two or more apertures G2, through any one of which screws G3 or like fastening devices are arranged to be inserted, the said screws entering openings in the lever-head and knife-blade, whereby to hold the cutting disks rrnly in position. The knife-blade B is provided with a lug H on its face adjacent the lever-head, which is adapted to engage with a shoulder H' on the said head to limit the Aoutward movement of the lever D. At its free end the lever D is formed with a hook extension I, adapted to enter a recess J in the handle, being normally held therein by engagement with a pivoted catch K, whose lower end is pressed outwardly by a spring K' and is formed with a fingerpiece K2, which the operator may press to release the lever. At the forward end of the cheek-piece C a recess is provided, in which 'is held a leaf-spring L, whose free end engages the under side of the lever D and tends to throw said lever outwardly.
Now it will be seen that when the hunter desires to cut a wire-fence obstruction the spring-catch is pressed to release the lever D, which is thrown outwardly by the spring L, theV knife is placed with the cutting edges of the disks embracing the wire, and thelever is pressed toward the handle of the knife to cut the wire.- Vhenone set of cutting edges becomes dull, another set may be brought into register with the recesses in the leverhead and knife-blade by removing the screws G3 and inserting them in other apertures in the disks. In this way the usefulness of the device is greatly increased, it being manifest that when all the cutting'edges of the disks have become dulled they may be removed and sharpened or replaced by new ones.
In order to aid the user of the knife to better direct a blow with it, I have secured a curved lug M to the cheek-piece C, the said lug being adapted for engagement with the thu mb of the user.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A knife, consisting of the blade formed with a recess in its back edge, a lever having a head pivotally attached to said blade and having ay recess arranged to register with the recess in the blade, and cutting-disks secured to the abutting sides of the knife-blade and lever-head, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A knife, consisting of a blade having cheek-pieces attached thereto on each side near its rear end whereby to form a handle and a recess in its back edge in front of said handle, one of said cheek-pieces being out away along its upper edge, a lever formed with a head pivotally attached to the side of said blade and having a recess arranged to register With the recess in the blade, the said lever lying normally along the cut-away edge of the cheek-piece and having a hook eXtension, and a spring-catch secured to the handle and arranged for locking engagement with the hook extension, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device of the character described,
the blade formed with a recess the lever piv' otally secured thereto and also formed with a corresponding recess, and the cutting-disks secured to the said lever and blade, the said disks being provided With a plurality of cutting-recesses and means for bringing' any one of the saine into registry with the recesses in the blade and lever, as and for the purpose set forth. p
4. In a device of the character described, the blade formed With a recess, the lever pivotally attached to said blade and having a recess arranged to register With the recess in the blade, and the cutting-disks conntersunk 3o y
