PATENT FFICE.
IRENE HOYEZ, OF STEPHEN, MINNESOTA.
BAND-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 512,965, dated January 16, 1894.
Application filed April 22, 1893- Serial No. 471,370. (No 'model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRENE HOYEZ, of Stephen, in the county of Marshall and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Band-Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to knives for cutting belts or hands used for driving thrashing and other machines, and it consists in a cutter for this and similar or other purposes, of novel construction and comprising new and useful combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section, upon the line 1-1 in Fig. 2, of a band cutter embodying my invention, and representing the main blades of the cutter as closed within the sheath or handle. Fig. 2 is a View from the under side of the implement, with the parts in the same position as in Fig. 1, and showing certain additional small blades used to cut the lacings or leather strings uniting the ends of a band. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cutter with its band cutting blades open; and Fig. at a longitudinal section of the rear portion of the handle with the additional small blades thrown open.
A indicates the handle of the knife or band cutter and B B its main or band cutting blades. These blades are fastened together at their one end by joint and a screw b or in any convenient manner that will admit of their being separated from each other when required to be sharpened. When united to each other they form an acute angle along their cutting edges 0 c relativelyto each other, with the point of the one blade B facing more or less the rear end of the handle, when the two blades B B are thrown out of the sheath or handle to cut a belt or band by drawing the two cutting edges of said blades through the belt or band from its opposite sides. The blade B of these united blades is pivoted to the handle, as at cl, to admit of the combined blades being opened out of the handle to cut the band, as shownin Fig. 3, or of being shut within the handle as shown in Fig. 1, so that the tool can be carried in the pocket without dulling the edges of the blades, the handle or sheath being suitably recessed between its opposite sides for the purpose of receiving said blades within it.
If desired, a spring 0 in and along the back of the handle, may be used to hold the blades B B closed within the handle, and also to hold them open and at any desired angle relatively to the length of the handle. Thus the pivoted end a of the blade B is of enlarged circular or disk form and has a lip f,
-for a detent or pawl D acted on by the spring tively to the length of the handle may be,
changed and the blades held locked. By applying pressure, through any suitable means,
to force the spring 0 inward, the pawlD is or may be released from the lip f or notches g, to allow of the blades B B being opened out of the handle or of being closed Within it as required.
In the rear end of the handle A is pivoted, as at h, a series of independent small blades E arranged side by side, for cutting lacings or leather strings of various widths uniting the ends of a belt or band together. These blades shut into a recess '0' on the under side of the handle and are controlled by a spring G, or each may be controlled by a separate spring. When these blades are thrown open to cut, as shown for two of them in Fig. 2 and as shown in Fig. at, the spring Gengageswith a shoulder It on the blades.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a band cutter, a blade secured at one end to a handle, a second blade secured to the free end of the first blade and held in a fixed relation thereto when in use, the cutting edge of one blade facing that of the other and forming an angle therewith, substantially as specified.
2. In a band cutter, the combination with the recessed handle of the blade pivoted to said handle, means for locking the blade in an open or closed position, a second blade secured to the free end of the first blade and held in a fixed relation thereto when in use, the cutting edge of one blade facing that of the other and forming an angle therewith and the combined blades arranged to close within the said handle, substantially as specified.
3. In a band cutter of the character described, the combination with the handle A, of the united angling blades B B the one of which is pivoted to the handle, the spring 0, and the pawl D adapted to engage with the pivoted end portion of said one of the two in combination with the angling band cutting blades B B pivotally connected with the opposite end of the handle, essentially as and for the purpose specified.
IRENE HOYEZ.
