CHARLES H. XVIOKERSHAM, OF POTTSTOXVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNIFE=RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 809,426, dated December 16, 188 1.
Application filed May 24, 1884. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Wronnn- SHAM, of Pottstown, in the county of Moutgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and Improved Knil'eEing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to furnish an implement for the use of clerks and others who have "frequent need of a knife for cutting strings on packages; and it consists in a knifering having guards that retain it in place on the finger, and constructed to closeup com- 1 times with the blade closed or pactly when not in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved implement; and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same as closed.
A is the ring having a groove, a, in its surface, in which is pivoted a blade or cutter, b, that is preferably of the curved form shown. The groove a is cut through to the inside of the ring for a portion of its length, whereby the portion beneath the heel of the blade forms a spring-tongue, i, that retains the blade either open or closed. The surface of the ring has also formedin ittwo grooves,co, at opposite sides, and in these grooves are pivoted the guards (Z d, both pivots or hinge-pins being at one side of the ring. The guards d are of semicircular form, so as to close snugly in the grooves 0 when turned down in the direction illustrated by the dotted lines, and they are pivoted at what will be the side of the ring in use while the blade is at the bottom or the top. The guards are retained when open or closed by back-springs similar to that behind the blade. Vhen the ring A is put on the users finger, preferably the little finger of either hand, the guards (I will embrace the next finger, and the ring thereby prevented from turning and the blade cutting the fingers.
The device may conveniently be worn at all opened for use. hen removed from the finger,the gua rds can also be closed, so that the implement may be readily carried in the pocket.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 1. The knife-ring provided with a pivoted cutter, and with guards Z,hinged to fold down upon the ring, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with ring A, having grooves a c, of pivoted blade b, and the pivoted guards d, substantially as described.
3. In a knife-ring, the combination of ring A, slotted to form a tongue, t, and the blade b, pivoted above the tongue, as specified.
CHARLES H. WIOKERSHAM.
