PAPER-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,660, dated February 18, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. LAMONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Paper-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is the production of an implement adapted to cut strips from the edge of a sheet of paper; and it is especially designed to open sealed envelops, to separate the uncut leaves of magazines, &c.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper-cutter embody-. ing the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end View of the paper-cutter, showing the cutting-disk forced downward into the cutting-groove.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In the construction of this paper-cutter I provide a framework A, of spring-brass or other suitable material, having upper and lower arms A and A respectively. In the arm A a box-loop A is formed, the walls of said loop being perforated with the bearingopenings A The lower arm A extends slightly beyond the upper arm A and is provided with a cuttinggroove A coinciding with the loop A, in the bottom of which groove is a slit A. At the rear end of the frame A, I provide an eye A by means of which the cutter may be secured upon a key-ring.

A shaft B extends through the bearingopenings A in the walls of the box-loop A and rigidly mounted thereon is a cutting-disk B. The rear face of this cuttingdisk is slightly convex, the other face being correspondingly concave.

In use the cutter is grasped between the thumb and fingers of one hand of the operator and the paper to be out placed between the arms A and A underneath the cuttingdisk B. The envelop or paper to be cut is held in the left hand, the disk depressed against the paper, and the cutter drawn across the paper by the operator. As the disk travels across the paper it cuts through the latter. The slit A is provided in the cutting-groove A to prevent contact between the disk and the bottom of said groove.

The cutter is intended to be made sufficiently small to be carried in the pocket and may be attached to a key-ring, the ring passing through the eye A at the rear end of the frame A.

I claim as my invention 1. In a paper-cutter, in combination,a frame comprising two spring'arms, one of said arms being provided with a cutting-groove; and a cutting-disk rotatably mounted upon the other one of said arms, the edge of said cut ting-disk being adapted to enter said groove.

2. In a paper cutter, in combination,a frame comprising two spring-arms, one of said arms being provided with a cutting-groove a boxloop formed in the other of said arms; and a cutting-disk rotatably mounted within said box-100p, the edge of said cutting-disk being adapted to enter said groove.

3. In a paper-cutter, in combinatioma frame comprising two spring-arms, one of said arms being provided with a cutting-groove having a slit in its lower portion; a box-100p formed in the other of said arms; a shaft journaled in the walls of said loop; and a cutting-disk mounted upon said shaft, the cutting edge of said disk being adapted to enter said cutting= groove.
