ADDRESSING MAGHINE. I No, 404,732. I Patented June 4,1889.
N. PETERS, Fhuin-Lilhognphur. Washingiun, o. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES 'W. H. REISINGER, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADDRESSING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,732, dated. June 4, 1889.
Application filed October 4, 1888. Serial No. 287,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. H. REIsINeER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Addressing-lvlachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvem cuts in addressing-1n achines; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter set forth fully, and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a pair of shears, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 isa sectional view taken through the line was of one of the blades. Fig. 3 is a sectiona'l'view taken through the line 1 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 isaperspective view showing the manner in which.
my improvement may beused.
A refers to the thumb operative blade of a pair of shears, and B the finger operative blade, which are pivoted to each other, the handles thereof being of ordinary construction.
The blade B has formed thereon near its pivot an enlarged portion or rib Z), to whichis secured by means of screws 1) a flat plate 0, which extends to the point of the blade and parallel therewith. Between the point of the blade B and the rib b the blade has formed thereon a projecting lug I), provided with a screw-threaded opening, in which is placed a set-screw cl, the end of which bears upon the upper surface of the plate O, to adjust it to and keep it in a position in which its lower surface is even with the edge of the blade to which it is attached. I
The construction of the shears is such that when the blades are closed in the act of cutting the lower or cutting edge of the blade B passes below the lower or back edge of the blade A, so that when the shears are closed the blade B and the plate attached thereto shall alone press upon the substance to which the label or address is to be affixed.
In making use of myinvention the gummed slip upon which the addressis printed is held in the left hand, a portion thereof havingbeen first moistened by passing the same overawet sponge. The scissors are then laid so that the lower edge of the blade A will rest upon the paper to be addressed, and the printed address-slip is passed between the blades. When the blades are closed, the slip will be cut and the plate will press the same securely upon the paper below. The scissors and addressslips can be readily manipulated and the device in practice will be found extremely simple, rapid, and convenient.
When it is desired to sharpen the blades, the plate can be removed.
I claim 1. The combination, substantially as describ( d, of the blade A, the blade B, pivoted thereto and provided near its point with a thread ed boss, a horizontal pressure-plate secured at its inner end to blade B near the pivot, and a vertical setscrew adj ustably seated in the threaded boss to bear upon said plate near its outer end.
2. The combination, with the blades A and B, pivoted to each other and provided with operating-handles, of a plate O, carried by one of the blades, and aset-screw, also carried by the same blade, against which the plate will abut, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the blade A, of a blade B, having aprojection b, to which aplate O is removably attached, and a lug secured to said blade between the point and projection b, said lug having a screw-threaded perforation for the reception of a set-screw d, against which the plate will abut, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES \V. H. 'REISINGER.
