SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,291, dated June 29, 1897.

Be it known that I, ANNA C. SOHLANDER, a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cutting Cloth or Like Material, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective apparatus whereby cloth, paper, leather, or the like may be readily andaccurately cut; and the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.

Fig. 4 is a View in side elevation of the rotatable knife and its handle. Fig. 5 is a View in side elevation of the guide-roller and its handle.

A designates the rotatable knife that is journaled between arms Z) at the lower end of the handle I The arms I) may be provided with a shank (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 extending up into the handle, and upon this shank at the base of the handle B I prefer to provide a shield C to guard the hand of the user from contact with the knife A. The knife A is preferably journaled upon one end of a guide-rod D, the end of this rod being slightly reduced where it passes through holes in the lower ends of the arms I), and the outer end of the guide-rod D is preferably screw-threaded to receive a nut d, whereby the guide-rod is securely united to the arms b. Upon the guide-rod D is adj ustably mounted a guide-roller E, that is journaled between arms f of a slidin g head F, through which the guide-rod D passes, and this head F has an upwardly-extending portion f, that carries a handle G. The head F is provided with a threaded hole to receive a thumb-screw II, that serves to securely hold the head F in any position to which it may be set along the guide-rod D. The guide-rod D is preferably provided with an inch-scale or graduations in order to enable the guide-roller E to be set at any desired distance, so as to determine the width of the cloth to be out.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that when cloth or like material is to be cut the guide-roller E will be set to the proper position upon the guide-rod G, after which the operator will grasp with one hand the handle 13 and with the other hand the handle G. The handles B and G will then be advanced over the cloth, the rotatable knife A severing the cloth, while the line of out is determined by the guide-roller E.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An apparatus of the character described comprising in combination a rotatable cutter, a handle for said cutter, a laterally-extending rod and a guide having a handle, said guide and said cutter being mounted upon said rod and serving to support the same and being adjustable relative to each other.
