Description

IINITED STATES.
PATENT OFF-Ica@ JAMES J. RUSS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 56,615, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES J. RUSS, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Knife and Scissors Sharpener Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The presentinvention relates to a novel and useful implement or device for sharpening the blades of scissors, shears, and other similar cutting-instruments, and also the blades of knives, and it consists in thev combination, with a novel constructed stand, of a sharpener-plate, which is so secured to one side of the same as to be adjustable thereon, and against the edges of which Sharpener-plate, by means of slots or guideways suitably formed in the stand, the knife or scissors blades, as the case may be, can be properly brought to bear to sharpen the same, as will be apparent from the following detail description of the sharpener, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure lis a front elevation of the sharpener; Fig. 2, an elevation of one edge of the stand, with the sharpener-plate in central vertical section 5 Fig. 3, a transverse horizontal section taken in the plane of the line a: 0c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents the stand of the Sharpener, which may be made of wood or other suitable material, and of the general form and appearance shown in the drawings, with a broad base, b, or of any other proper shape.
On the front side of the stand A is a thin steel or other suitable Sharpener-plate, B, which plate is made straight upon its edges and slightly beveled, so that when a knife or scissors blade is drawn across and over such edges their cutting-edges will be respectively sharpened. This plate B is slotted in its center in the direction and for a portion of its length, by which slot C and a suitable setscrew, D, the plate is secured tothe stand in a vertical position, as plainly shown in Figs. l and 2.
E E are two narrow slots made in the standA and across its width, which slots extend from the upper end of the stand in an angular direction toward the Sharpener-plate, one upon each side of the same, and intersecting the plane of such plate. Each terminates in an enlarged .end or throat, Gr, near the center line of the stand. In these slots E E the blade of the knife which is to be sharpened is placed, and then by bringing the sides of such knifeblade to bear against the edges of the sharpener-plate, first one and then the other, the desired cutting-edge must necessarily be produced upon the knife-blade and in amost perfect and complete manner, and with but little trouble, the slots or guideways E for the knifeblade holding the knife firmly to and against the edge of the Sharpener-plate as it is drawn through them, and both sides of the blade being sharpened by running or drawing the blade iirst through one and then the other of the two guides or Slots E.
Across the edges of the Sharpener-plate B, at or near its upper end, the blades of scissors are to be drawn for the purpose of being sharpened, the stand A being cut away or notched at F F upon its upper end and upon each side of the Sharpener-plate, to form a suitable guide or way for the scissors-blade when to be presented to the action of the Sharpener-plate.
By securing the Sharpener-plate by set-screw and slot to the stand A it is obvious that it can be adjusted in position upon the said stand to accommodate it to the wearing away of its edges from use-a quite important feature.
From the above description of my improved knife and scissors Sharpener combined it is plainly apparent that in construction and arrangement of its parts it is exceeding simple and cheap; that it is effective and convenient in use, and in every respect a most desirable article for family or domestic purposes especially.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the stand or holder A, having inclined slots E, and the Sharpenerplate B, when arranged and connected together substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The stand or holder A, slotted in an angnlar direction and notched at F, in combination With the Sharpener-plate B, the Whole together forming a combined knife and scissors Sharpener, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above speoieaton of lny invention signed by me this 11th day of May, 1866.
JAMES J. RUSS.
