SGISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application filed November 26, 1915. Serial No. 63,612.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. RIOHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissors and especially with reference to the provision of a knife blade which is attached to one of the scissors blades and is adapted to be extended out from the end of the scissors blade for use and to be moved back out of the way when not in use, and which may be also readily detached from the scissors blade, the obj ect of the invention being to provide an improved construction of scissors embodying a knife blade which may be used for ripping and for other purposes and in connection with the scissors.
'The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors provided with a sliding knife blade constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the knife blade projected in full lines. and drawn into the retaining groove ofthe scissors blade in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on a larger scale and on the plane indicated by the line a-a; of Fig. 1.
The scissors 1 may be of any suitable form and provided with blades 2-3. In accordance with my invention one of the scissors blades is provided, in its outer side, with a dovetailed groove 4 which extends to the outer end of the scissors blade and is of suitable length. I also provide a knife blade 5 of suitable length and which is cross sectionally shaped to fit in the groove 4, and is provided with a cutting edge 6. At its inner end the knife blade is provided with an outstanding lug 7 by means of which the blade may be readily extended from the outer end of the scissors blade or drawn inwardly in the groove or removed entirely from the scissors blade as may be desired. The knife blade when projected may be used for ripping and other purposes. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing that the said scissors blade is Provided with a longitudinal bore 6 at the side of its groove corresponding with the sharpened edge 6 of the knife blade and that said sharpened edge extends into said bore so that the edge of the knife blade is protected from frictional contact with the scissors blade and hence is not dulled.
By the provision of the knife blade in a groove in one of the scissors blades the scissors are equipped with means for ripping and doing similar work and the usefulness of the scissors is greatly increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the class described, an ele ment having a groove in one side and extending to one end thereof, and a knife blade slidably fitted in said groove and adapted tobe projected from or drawn into said element, said groove having overhanging side walls and the blade being shaped cross sectionally to fit in the groove and being also provided with a longitudinal slot and with an outstanding lug, and a stop screw engaged in an opening in the bottom of the groove and arranged in said slot of the knife blade.
In testimony whereof I, affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I GEORGE E. RIOHEL.
Witnesses FREDERICK Wuns'rnn, ANDREW SMITH.
