WALTER CONNESS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CORD-CUTTING DEVICE.
Application filed October 21, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER CoNNEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord- Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cord cutters and particularly to devices of this character intended for attachment to store counters and the like.
In the accompanying drawing I illustrate the preferred form of the device.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device attached to the corner of a counter, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal axial section of the same.
The cutting blade is sustained and guarded by a U-shaped guard member 1, bent up out of thin bar stock of suitable width. One arm of the member 1 is perforated at 2 and is held to the counter top or other suitable support by a screw 3. The other arm of the member 1 is longitudinally slotted at 4 and is bent into a loop 5. I A blade 6 eX- tends through a slot 7 in the member 1 and is embedded at its point in the counter top. The rear end of the blade 6 lies in slot 4: and is provided with a notch 8 engaged by a pin 9 which is passed through the loop 5.
In mounting the device, the blade, guard and pin are assembled, the point of the blade projecting through the guard. The knife point is then forced into the wood of the counter top or other support until the guard Specification of Letters Patent.

rests fairly on the counter top. After this the screw 3 is driven to place.
From the above it will be noted that the parts are simple in form and few in number and amply support and protect the blade, while the blade steadies the guard against any turning movement about the screw.
When a cord is drawn against the blade to be cut it necessarily receives a drawing cutting stroke. Should the cord not be severed by the time it reaches the slot 7 the guard will support the cord and force it against the blade to insure the completion of the cutting operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of a U-shaped guard provided with a blade sustaining member at the extremity of one of its arms, and with a slot in the other of its arms; means for mounting said guard on a support with its slotted arm in contact therewith; and aseparately formed cutting blade supported by said sustaining member extending diagonally between the arms of said guard and projecting beyond said guard through said slot. whereby the blade will be embedded in and partially sustained by a support upon which the guard may be mounted.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WALTER CONNESS.
